Blanket + Sleeping Bag

Baby is 4 months old. It's bloody freezing in here and I can't see how he'll be warm enough in his short-sleeved vest, sleepsuits, and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. I'm cold under my duvet. I think it's around 16 degrees in here.

Can I put a blanket over him too? Or is that too risky?

Is it a cellular blanket? I doubt it's risky, but I have a pfb too so I'm sure someone with more experience will confirm. I mean, all babies had blankets on them before sleeping bags were invented

What temp is the room? If cold enough you could put socks and a long sleeve vest on too. You can always get a 3.5 tog bag too

Reccy2018 · 19/01/2019 02:36

Sorry, just saw you guess is 16 degrees. I think Chuck a muslin or blanket over. The baby will wake up often if cold to let you know!

spudlet7 · 19/01/2019 02:39

It's 16 degrees according to thermometer but it feels about -5 lol! Yes cellular. I suppose I'm more concerned I might be wrong and he could overheat rather than slide under the covers. I see you're up too, presumably with little one. Thanks to you in lieu of sleep!

Reccy2018 · 19/01/2019 02:46

Yeah, mine has a cold and is waking herself up snuffling - and me.

If cellular, I'd put the blanket on too, go with your gut!

Reccy2018 · 19/01/2019 02:47

Thanks for the flowers! Right bank at you! Flowers they are a bloody worry, aren't they!

Biancadelriosback · 19/01/2019 02:58

The advice is not to, but I did when DS was little. As long as it's very light weight. They're tougher than you think remember!!

Weezermum · 19/01/2019 03:07

The baby might wriggle down and the blanket might end up over their face. Could you put the heating on for the night?

Reccy2018 · 19/01/2019 03:20

The baby can breathe with a cellular blanket on. It has holes in for them to be able to breathe. Not everyone uses a sleeping bag in the world!

babyworry2018 · 19/01/2019 04:56

I did exactly the same yesterday, took her temp this morning and it was only 35 so she was borderline hypothermic. Check the back of neck but at 16 degrees an extra cellular blanket won't overheat

EmUntitled · 19/01/2019 07:10

I would think it's his arms that are cold, can you put a cardigan on under the sleeping bag or get one of the sleeping bags with arms? I wouldnt have thought a cellular blanket would make any difference as they're so thin and will probably fall off as soon as he moves.

EmUntitled · 19/01/2019 07:10

You can also get 3.5 tog sleeping bags

el1506 · 19/01/2019 07:20

My baby is the same age and we’ve got a freezing room too. She was waking up with a freezing head and even with mitts on, her hands were like blocks of ice. I bit the bullet last week and she’s now in long sleeved vests, a sleepsuit, the 2.5tog sleeping bag and a cellular blanket (tucked under the mattress). She’s been going an extra hour or so between wake ups and I’m sure it’s because she’s a bit cosier. Good luck.

JellySlice · 19/01/2019 07:42

Tuck your fingers into the neck of his vest to feel his chest or back. If his chest or back are sweaty then he is too hot. If they are toasty then he is warm, even if his hands are cold. If they are cool then he needs a blanket or other extra layer. I used to put a cardigan on over the sleeping bag. It made quite a difference.

If you use an extra blanket, remember to place the baby in the cot feet-to-foot so they cannot wriggle down under the blanket (something you don't really need to consider if they're just in a sleeping bag).

One of mine used to manage to pull blankets up over his head, so I would tuck half the blanket under the foot of the mattress. Which was why I switched to putting a cardigan on him - much easier!

kaytee87 · 19/01/2019 07:56

Cellular blankets are fine. Sleeping bags are a relatively new invention for babies.
Just remember that the baby's feet should be right at the bottom of the crib. I also tuck the edges of the blanket around the mattress.
Buy some long sleeved vests to keep his arms a bit warmer. You can also get 3.5 tog sleeping bags.

Bananarama12 · 19/01/2019 08:08

You can get 2.5 tog sleepsuits from jojomamanbebe which I think are much better than sleeping bags.
My DS has bodysuit, sleepsuit, 2.5 tog sleepsuit, and a blanket in his room.

Fizzyhedgehog · 19/01/2019 08:22

You can get warmer sleepsuits. I think we had some fleece ones when DS was that little. I also had a 3.5 tog sleeping bag with arms.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 19/01/2019 08:49

Yep blanket is o. The best idea is to tuck both sides right under the cot mattress and make a pocket so the blanket doesn’t move

LooseSeal2 · 19/01/2019 08:57

My youngests room is 14c at points (and 30+ in summer 🙄).

He wears a long sleeve vest, pj’s & socks (or sleepsuit) 3.5tog bag. He’s nice and warm when he wakes, apart from his icy hands.

tryinganewname · 19/01/2019 08:58

DD (6 months) is currently in a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit, 2.5 tog grobag and a quilt, I have the quilt from her waist only and tucked tightly down. She doesn't move at all during sleep though.

She also has a heater in the room but previous to adding the quilt she was waking every 1-2 hours, now it's just once a night so she must have been cold the poor thing Sad

Damn old and cold houses!

Thishatisnotmine · 19/01/2019 09:06

At 4 months you might find that they tabgle themselves up in the blanket plus bag.

Dd2 is 2o months and does have a blanket over her sleeping bag/ padded Jojo maman bebe sleep snuggler (both currently with sleeves) and also pyjamas, short sleeve bodysuit, socks, and last night had a thermal vest on too as she is ill and very cold. Her room gets down to about 14 by her cot and about 10 near the corner and window.

You can get 3.5 tog sleeping bags, we had one with arms too!

NoParticularPattern · 19/01/2019 09:12

I’d look at something thicker to go under the bag and also possibly a thicker bag. My daughter is still chilly at 18 degrees with a 2.5 toy bag, vest and sleepsuit. I’m considering a wool sleeping bag and a thicker layer over her top half as her arms (the whole of them, not just hands) and face are frozen and it’s waking her up in the night. Off to look at sleep snugglers too

Amanduh · 19/01/2019 09:17

Please dont put a quilt on your six month old over the top of a sleeping bag op.
Look at arms covered sleeping bags, but if it’s 16 degrees and baby has a vest, sleepsuit and sleeping bag I doubt they’re really cold! Try long sleeved vests or a 3.5 tog x

VelcroMummy · 19/01/2019 09:18

gro.co.uk/what-to-wear/

Elsewhere they advise against using socks or gloves and have said their grobag don't have sleeves as baby's can regulate their temperature through their arms and hands

Blanket + Sleeping Bag
abcdema · 19/01/2019 09:21

I'm having same concerns with 14mo DD. Keeps waking and I'm suspicious it's because she is cold.

Re the cold hands- get the growsuits from the grow company, they have padded arms and are designed for under sleeping bags. It's about £22 for 2 but I use them every night from about Nov-April so they get plenty of use.

So I have her in that, short sleeved vest and 2.5 bag. But she's waking up and feels cool. Might need to invest in 3.5 bag, so following this thread with interest
