I am having a moment of nostalgia as I try to teach my British kids the delights of growing up in England in the 1980's... the poor buggers have ne concept of having dessert with their school lunch! And the US school lunches are utterly vile.

I want to make them warm shortcake with cherries in and lashings of custard, chocolate pud with choccy custard, cornflake tarts... what other great options do you remember, and any idea where I can find the recipes?

Drooling in anticipation...

Toffee cornflake layer with tinned manadrins and cream

missmouse101 · 19/01/2019 10:15

Warm ginger sponge with white vanilla sauce! We had warm jam doughnuts every Tuesday lunch time too! Grin Very early 1980s, this was!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 19/01/2019 10:15

Australian Crunch was my favourite! Off to search out a recipe on pinterest

Chocolate sponge with peppermint custard was a regular pudding at my junior school.

Rice pudding with raspberry jam.

QuestionableMouse · 19/01/2019 10:15

Cornflake cake is the business.

Sindragosan · 19/01/2019 10:17

The pink jelly fluff was great. No idea how they managed such a thing, but it was a mousse / jelly combo

I think you make up the jelly but with less water (330ml which is a standard tin size) and when it is almost, but not fully, set you whip in a tin of evaporated milk and leave it to set.

MargueritaPink · 19/01/2019 10:25

sorry, I mean you make up the jelly with half the quantity of water and thern add the the evaporated milk to make up the difference.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 19/01/2019 10:29

Pink blamange, tapioca... Not pleasant choices but they definitely stuck in my head!

possumgoddess · 19/01/2019 10:32

My OH would say Gipsy tart. It is a regional thing I think, I've never had it myself.

MamaLovesMango · 19/01/2019 10:36

We used to have a trifle that was clearly tinned fruit, a tiny bit of disintegrated sponge and loads of artificial cream (dream topping?) on top with sprinkles. It must’ve been frozen too because it nearly always wasn’t 100% defrosted on eating which added to the charm Grin I used to like that one.

pintsizedblondie · 19/01/2019 10:37

Cornflake tart with apple!

Seeline · 19/01/2019 10:37

We had warm ginger cake with a thick lemon syrup sauce which was amazing.
Also something they called college pudding which was really just fruit cake, but lovely.

mrsjackrussell · 19/01/2019 10:37

Iv got this book it's fantastic. I made marbled sponge, jam pudding, home made custard.

I make half quantities of this in a loaf tin

www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/jammy-coconut-sponge/

I just microwave a couple of spoons of jam, brush it over and sprinkle with coconut (a lot less than the recipe)

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2019 10:45

We never had pink custard at school or hot sponge puddings. I was a deprived child! Confusedbut the iced buns were to die for!

kateandme · 19/01/2019 10:59

Arctic roll
iced bun
chocolate coconut slice with green icing
pink custard
sponge with a layer of jam and coconut
cornflake tart
apple pie with squirty cream on top

Thanks everyone! I'd forgotten 3/4 of these and can't wait to remember... I had an iced bun every day for breaktime... and a jacket potato with baked beans and cheese for lunch with a blue raspberryade to drink... I miss that teenager metabolism :D

At primary school, Manchester tart as described by a PP, although the I don't remember the coconut. I think it would be easy to make without recipe.
At secondary school, my favourites were Polish cake, which was a chocolate and digestive biscuit base with a layer of chocolate on the top. I don't think it was baked, more a refrigerator cake. We also used to have Jamborees which were jam sandwiches that were battered and deep fried. I am not huge on battered fried things but these were delicious!

The jelly thing mentioned above is definitely made with evaporated milk, my gran used to make it the way described.

ShadyLady53 · 19/01/2019 19:02

I was at school in the 90s and 00s and didn’t get any of this ☹️.

I do remember pink custard that tasted like washing up liquid and blancmange that was also pink in primary school but I don’t think we got a sweet everyday. I struggled to eat, so maybe they refused to give me pudding. At Juniors, I bought a slice of cold apple pie or an apple turnover stuffed with cream a couple of times.

At home Syrup Sponge, Apple Crumble and Treacle Sponge, all with custard were firm favourites!

concretesieve · 19/01/2019 19:39

Rockmysocks I'd forgotten all about the swirls of 'cream'! I know exactly what you mean but, alas, have no idea what it consists of.

PabloTescobar · 19/01/2019 20:14

Treacle tart and custard was my favourite, along with chocolate sponge with chocolate custard - oh and jelly and ice cream, but that hardly needs a recipe!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 19/01/2019 20:25

I remember DS2 coming home from reception saying, "Mum, we had this amazing pudding; it was circles of sponge, carved out in the middle, with the thinnest thinnest layer of jam and then the hole filled up with ice cream."

So Arctic Roll then, you poor deprived child. Grin

Croprotationinthe14thcentury · 19/01/2019 20:33

We used to have an amazing sponge cake with icing on top that had hundreds and thousands in it. So nice! Also raspberry ripple ice cream in little tubs!
