Vaccinations

Really need some reassurance. My DS had his first set of vaccinations 4 or so hours ago (he's 12 weeks old).

He's been hysterical ever since we got home. He goes from freaking out and having a wide eyed scared look on his face, to screaming his head off until he's purple. Other than the brief periods where he's been asleep, he's done this for 4 hours.

I hate that I can't help him and have never seen my rather content happy little boy cry like this before.

AIBU to be struggling? Not only with the 4 hours worth of crying, but also because I can't do much to help him? What is it that's actually hurting him?

I've given him calpol. His temp is still up but not worryingly so.

I know this is all normal but I have had 4 hours sleep in 2 days and I'm falling apart a little...

Anyone? Am I being silly?

HV here. Lots of skin to skin, it will help soothe him. He should calm down soon. Keep on top of the calpol. I know it's hard but you've done the right thing getting him immunised Thanks my DS was the same, after 24 hours he settled, although was still a little grumpy.

ohwownosnow · 18/01/2019 20:04

His legs may be a little sore so keep loose fitting clothes on him, maybe just a vest and a blanket x

EvadneRhodes · 18/01/2019 20:06

I just feel so sorry for him. I'm so tired I don't know how I'm going to get through tonight with DH away.

Low lighting, laid on you(skin to skin) and keep on top of the Calpol. Poor little mite.

Di11y · 18/01/2019 20:10

ibuprofen!

Takaras · 18/01/2019 20:11

Hi OP, our DD was exactly the same after her first jabs and my DH was away for the night too as it happens.

It is heartbreaking but eventually she slept ok and later the following morning was back to her old self. It was a shock for me too as she is a happy baby.

The next ones weren't as bad.

Eatmycheese · 18/01/2019 20:12

Do you breastfeed?
If so that’s what got my three through their vaccinations.

Hope he’s back to himself soon
They get a fair few in one go now

LilQueenie · 18/01/2019 20:12

there is a yellow card thing it should be reported to for safety data. If it continues do take him to A&E or at least ring nhs24.

I remember this well. My dd was hysterical for hours, it was awful 😩 keep an eye on where the needles went in, my daughters swelled and went a funny colour I had to take her back to the doctors and they said it was normal but would be very painful.

Lot of cuddles and try and not touching the area.

Best of luck hope he settles soon

HJWT · 18/01/2019 20:17

My DD was exactly the same with her first jabs! Its heartbreaking but every time after the first she was fine Thanks

MissConductUS · 18/01/2019 20:17

I second the advice for ibuprofen.

It's hard when they're that young but he should bounce back quickly.

When I got my flu jab this year I felt a bit poorly the next day. It's a small price to pay for not getting the flu or passing it along to someone else.

Littlebelina · 18/01/2019 20:22

Did he get the rotavirus vaccine? I think that is what made dd really windy and colicky after hers. If you've got gripe water it might help (evidence is low) but might be worth a shot?

He'll need to be 5kg for ibuprofen but if he is below that weight might be worth giving 111 a call as they might give you an adjusted dose

PointeShoesandTutus · 18/01/2019 20:29

This happened with my DD too - but with a high temperature too. We rang 111 and they gave us an adjusted ibuprofen dose for her weight - her temperature was down and she was peaceful within the hour.

You are doing a great job mama, and you will get through this together. This too shall pass.

The first one was by far the worse so try not to worry for future vaccinations.

BudgieBalls · 18/01/2019 20:37

Is it high pitched screaming, usually with arching of the back? You really should call the emergency number (111?) if this is the case, it can be a side effect of vaccinations called encephalitis (brain inflammation) and is very serious. Tbh I would call them anyway as your baby has been crying almost non stop for 4 hours, and far better to call and make sure it's standard than leave it and it be something serious. I hope your baby is okay x

Mojitomogul · 18/01/2019 20:40

Agree with budgieballs- I'd be worried if it goes on any longer about brain inflammation, adverse effects are rare but i wouldn't think twice about ringing in and getting advice.

EvadneRhodes · 18/01/2019 23:15

He seems to have settled a little now. Did you all set alarms through the night to give calpol?
