My baby's cough

DS is 1+10 months (almost 2).
His cough started on 9th December. It improved a lot just before Christmas and has worsened again in the past few days.
He's been coughing very regularly today especially when he's napped, and just about 5 minutes he's started doing this really wheezy cough. He's not wheezing while he breathes, but when he coughs, a big loud wheeze is coming out (I'm not sure if that makes 100% sense?)
He's completely fine otherwise in himself, eating, drinking, happy and playful, not tired.
But should I be concerned about that noisy wheeze when he coughs?
He's got a doctors appointment next week but I'm just wondering if it's okay to leave it until then now this has started?

Could it be asthma? X

erja · 18/01/2019 17:18

@TeddybearBaby I'm not sure of the symptoms of asthma so young, I'm going to have a search!

Google stridor and make sure he’s not making that noise. Otherwise I think I would get him checked over tomorrow just for peace of mind (presuming you can get an OOH appointment)

erja · 18/01/2019 17:22

Is anyone able to advise whether I should seek help ASAP with this? I'm in two minds given that he's completely fine in himself but when he coughs it sounds dreadful.

If your worried call 111 for advice

erja · 18/01/2019 17:23

@cakesandphotos nope, just a really high pitched and loud wheeze when he coughs- he's breathing normally with no noise.

My 6mo has had similar cough since early Dec. Now been seen twice by GP but chest is clear, breathing fine etc etc and he's fine in himself. Doctor said to look out for breathing difficulties, not eating etc and to come back if any doubt, but as he's OK in himself not to worry. I reckon you should be fine unless anything changes. Just monitor and get an ooh appointment if needed over weekend

I’m not sure how asthma would present itself in an infant either tbh but your description reminds me of my husband and nephew when they need their pump. Just constant coughing but not actually ill. Allergies can bring on a cough too I think. If you’re really worried take him to the hospital 💐

erja · 18/01/2019 17:32

@TeddybearBaby yeah, I'm a bit concerned it could be asthma now!

Call 111 for advice, you’ll likely get an out of hours appointment tonight. With my children if they’re well in themselves and not struggling to breathe I wouldn’t take them to the Dr but if you’re worried the gp is the right place for advice.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 18/01/2019 17:35

Croup maybe? 2 of my ds's had it.

cakesandphotos · 18/01/2019 17:35

Personally I would call 111. Far better for be seen for nothing Smile

TeddybearBaby · 18/01/2019 17:36

Good luck! He’ll be fine x

burblife · 18/01/2019 17:42

Has he had whooping cough vaccination?

erja · 18/01/2019 17:45

@burblife yeah!

If in doubt see a GP. Coughing is awful and exhausting for you both.

What's the humidity like in the house? Sometimes if you have heating on it can aggravate a cough as the air is to dry. One of my twins suffered dreadfully and was sorted really quickly by having a cool mist humidifier in his room.

Hi. My daughter had an ongoing wheezy cough. I took her to the gp and she gave us an inhaler with a tube and mask. She said that some children have asthma quite young although a lot grow out of it. The inhaler has helped so I'd go and ask just to be sure :)

How’s the baby op?
