To sell a car that I just bought

I just sold my car (9 years old) and was looking for the same model upgrade (still second hand), however ended up with a different model as it was more sporty, cool and with flashy digital dashboard. It was certainly more exciting to drive and look at than my previous small practical urban city car.

So after a couple of weeks driving, I've realised that although it is good, it is bigger, hence more difficult to park at the train station, lower hence need to slow down more when going over speed bumps, generally more bulky (albeit more stable). It is not overly practical for me.

Since I've seen the newest model of my previous car for sale and been dying to sell the current one (probs for the same price as I paid), cough up a around 2.5k more (of borrowed money - I can afford it - the current one is owned outright) and buy a car that I think is my dream car.

My DP and DC thinks I am a mad one. WWYD?

Get the one you really want before the one you don't depreciates!

MorningRichie · 18/01/2019 13:58

You'll not necessarily get what you paid for it. There a an extra owner on the logbook now.

You raise a good point though, cars get bigger from generation to generation. I drive a Toyota Yaris and it's much bigger than the original Yaris 20 years ago.

JohnCRaven · 18/01/2019 13:59

I did this and didn't regret the second purchase! I admitted being an idiot to my mum who lent me the money to buy the right car so I had time to sell the wrong car for the right price (i.e. not make a loss on it) Loved the second car and drove it over 70000 miles.

QuestionableMouse · 18/01/2019 14:01

Go an test drive the newer car first. Even better, get a 24 hour test drive if you can.

badlydrawnperson · 18/01/2019 14:03

YANBU

oreoxoreo · 18/01/2019 15:27

Thank you. Will arrange to test drive the dream car and see if I fall in/out of love with it. Yes for the current it is an extra keeper on the logbook, but if anyone listens I can explain! Nothing wrong with the current one, it is just not me.

Selling a car after a couple of weeks will certainly put some people off. My suspicion would be that there’s some issue with it regardless of what the seller says. I think you’ll be very lucky to get back what you paid (assuming you bought privately).

Tinty · 18/01/2019 16:08

If you bought your car from a dealership you will probably lose at least £1000. If you try to part exchange it for the new car they will probably offer you about £1000 less than you bought it for.

If you bought it privately you may get a similar amount for it, but it may take a while to sell.

starzig · 18/01/2019 16:32

Sell. You need a car you are happy and comfortable with even if you lose a but not cash.

crimsonlake · 18/01/2019 16:36

I have just bought a 2016 Ford Fiesta Zetec having had my old Zetec for 13 years. This one seems a lot bigger and the dashboard is all flashing lights which look nice but confuse me after driving my old banger for years. I have gone down to 3 doors to cut costs, something I never thought I would do. The doors are really long and wide and I really need to concentrate when opening them to get out in case I hit a parked car. Only had it for a few days but right now I would much prefer to be driving my old one. That is still on my drive and if it had not been having problems I think I would go back to it now. Having a new car is stressful if you ask me.

JohnCRaven · 18/01/2019 19:25

I got the same price as I bought it for, minus cost cost of the Autotrader ad.

thenightsky · 18/01/2019 19:29

I used my hated one (Jazz) as a trade in against a Subaru 4 months after I bought it. I got what I paid for it (2K).

oreoxoreo · 18/01/2019 19:42

@thenightsky haha. My dream one is Jazz (the new one) and my current is Civic (9th gen).

I can see why you bought the Civic TBH. I would have done the same in your shoes. It does look a lot better than the Jazz.

I only hated my Jazz coz it was that particular Jazz. It had a fault that garage wouldn't fix and they tried to make out it was me being fussy.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 18/01/2019 21:06

Buy what you want, there’s nothing worse than having something big like a car, that isn’t quite right.

Yabbers · 18/01/2019 21:10

Get what you want.

The money you paid is gone and driving a shitty car you don’t like isn’t going to change that. Then you’ll be miserable that you paid for it AND miserable with the new car. How long is an acceptable time to drive something you made a mistake buying. Selling it now you'll recoup more of the cost than you would if you drive it for a couple of years then sell it. Life’s too short not to rectify mistakes just because someone thinks you’re mad.

oreoxoreo · 19/01/2019 08:09

Thank you all. Going to see the dream car tomorrow.
