Posting for traffic but has anyone started a family as a just Consultant/Post CCT fellow?

Just wondering how this worked out and obviously concerned as I’m currently 34 and know this is a little late to start but would be happy with just 1-2 children due to my lifestyle.

Just wondering how it has worked out for you in terms of affect in career and so on...

Oh gawd don’t join PMGUK they are all bonkers and shouty.

I had kids at senior reg level (am old) in a fairly non female speciality and it was HARD. I initially went back full time as LTFT would have slowed me too much but I secured a Job share consultant post which was unusual but blimey so needed.
Stayed in post and had second child before moving on when they were school age and going FT again.
Tbh it’s hard but you won’t be the only one male or female and there is some solidarity.

But these days consultants do much more anti social hours cover and are expected to be much more available/present so in some ways there isn’t a big change on that front

However the responsibility as a new consultant is tough. It can be really quite scary so starting that with less sleep etc on board is a big ask I think.

Have your kids pre stepping up or wait a couple of years after is my advice.

Ian your partner medical? That makes a huge difference. Helps if they can be available for childcare and share home responsibility fully.

Pick your hospital and team carefully. You will need your colleagues.
