To be worried about a lot of number plate changes

I've put a deposit down for a car at a very legit dealership with very good reviews and outstanding rating on auto trader as well as google.

I've decided to quickly do a full hpi check before fully committing to parting my cash, and a few of what's come up has caught my attention.

There has been 6 number plate changes between 2006 and 2018... no idea how it can be 2006 because the car is a 60 plate! and neither seem personalised as some is like (this is an example), PP03NNN, another is LILL977. Another one is BBB4141.

I've managed to check two on the hpi website. One came up as a Hyundai which has no MOT on the database but it is taxed until next year, and another came up as a Peugeot which again, has no mot on the database but taxed until end of this year!

And the last number plate that's not currently on the car actually came up the exact car I'm getting but the car has a different number plate which they said I need to use to insure and tax the vehicle!

I've got no reason to be suspicious with the dealerships as they are professional, but what is this then? Why are number plates being put on a vehicle that doesn't identify the other branded vehicle I've just mentioned?

I can only see one MOT online, the rest of the plates are not coming up as it is not recognised!

Alarm bells ringing here? Blush

It hasn't been stolen, scrapped, etc. Everything is green apart from this amount of number plate changes!

Alarm bells would be ringing for me as well. Particularly if there have been number plates since 2006 but the current number plate is 60. How old are they saying the car is?

Can you call the DVLA and ask if they have any further information on their records?

badlydrawnperson · 17/01/2019 17:42

Not sure how close the examples you are giving are to the actual plates - but, for example PP03NNN cannot be anything other than someone's personal plate if it's been on a 60 reg car.

To me 99.99% of "personal" plates make me go WTAF? so are you sure it's not just that?

badlydrawnperson · 17/01/2019 17:44

You can HPI check on VIN Numbers - maybe get that instead - sounds as if there is a glitch based on the reg number(s). It can't be a 2006 on a 60 plate.

BikeRunSki · 17/01/2019 17:45

Surely a 2006 car would be 55 or 06?

I’d say that any of those regs you’ve given could be chosen as personal plates.
