It depends how strictly your firms sickness policy is and what your job is. Mine is v strict and I don’t get paid sick days but I do work in an office, so I would dose up on every cold remedy possible and go in with a cold.

ScreamingValenta · 17/01/2019 17:17

If you feel too ill to work, you shouldn't go in.

Biancadelrioisback · 17/01/2019 17:18

Not really. It all depends on will you bring off leave your colleagues in the shit? Can you catch up on your work? Will your pay be affected by calling in sick and if so, can you afford to? Will there be any negative repercussions from you calling in sick? Also, are you off sick often?

If this is just a sort of one off and won't impact others (much) then do it! I always feel better when full of cold after a day in bed with crap TV and plenty of sleep. Better to have one day now than several next week.

Cheerbear23 · 17/01/2019 17:18

Posted too soon.., but if you work outdoors or with sick people I would consider calling in sick, it totally depends on your role and the firms policy.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 17/01/2019 17:19

I also have the lurgy.

Having to drag myself in for night shift in a few hours.

Pounding head, sore throat snd savage gough but my work don't pay sick pay and don't take kindly to people calling in sick.

WorraLiberty · 17/01/2019 17:20

Yes of course, if I could.

Although this normally sends MN into meltdown, with posters saying no-one should ever enter the workplace with a cold...spreading germs everywhere.

But meanwhile in the real world....

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 17/01/2019 17:22

It's a bit last minute tbh. The longer you leave it the less notice you are giving meaning it's harder to arrange cover. It depends what job you do though.

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 17/01/2019 17:22

I'd also never call in sick with a cold as you never know when you may need time off for proper illness.

OdeToDiazepam · 17/01/2019 17:27

I don't get sick pay

'Colds' can vary in severity. I've had some colds where I've ached all over, run a temperature and been barely able to move, and others where I've sneezed and coughed but felt more or less OK. You can't make a hard and fast rule.

OdeToDiazepam · 17/01/2019 17:29

We have to call on the day, I work in a cafe nothing vitally important! It's the pain as well that's really getting me down with it) achey and hot/cold, headache

Dose yourself up with Night Nurse, get a good night's rest and you'll probably feel better in the morning

Blueroses99 · 17/01/2019 17:32

I was working at home with a cold yesterday (working from home was unrelated to having a cold) but I was shivering, couldn’t concentrate and when I realised my temp was 39.2, I emailed a manager, sent myself to bed with some meds and went in today feeling much better. Though still with a cough and sniffles. Sometimes you have to let yourself recover rather than push on.

RagingWhoreBag · 17/01/2019 17:33

if you're achey and having hot/cold swings then it sounds more than "a cold" and I'd avoid, especially as you're working with food, directly handling money etc as you'll be in contact with people all day. If you were sat in an office, keeping to yourself and could wipe down your phone etc with an anti-bac wipe at the end of the day, maybe not so bad.

Cheerbear23 · 17/01/2019 18:07

It’s hard when you don’t get sick pay, ignoring the ‘rights’ & ‘wrongs’ of what people say about spreading germs, if you’re considering losing a days pay you must feel really bad. Try some beechams/ night nurse, strepsils etcand see how you are in the morning.

OdeToDiazepam · 17/01/2019 18:19

Thank you everyone I'll see how I feel

I'm shocked by how many people don't get sick pay. I've never worked anywhere where it wasn't paid (although not always in the probation period).
