To refuse to work with a sick person

I work in a pub. The woman I work with(she’s the manager) has asked if anyone else can cover her shift as she is ill. Described as a ‘cold/sicky thing’... if she can’t get cover, I suspect she may come in anyway. Good on her, but not so good for me, who’ll have to work with her!
I can’t afford to get anything like that at the mo. I have young kids who’d inevitably catch it, I’m starting up a business next week too.
WIBU to say I can’t work with you if you’re ill??

No you can't. Don't be so wet just practice good hand hygiene and keep as far away from her as possible.

You cannot avoid bugs totally, you will probably pass a dozen people with a bug on your way to work and undoubtedly more will come into the pub.
Sorry op but that just life.

Shoxfordian · 17/01/2019 13:28

If you want to avoid germs then you shouldn't leave your house. Ever.

Yabu

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 17/01/2019 13:31

Respectfully get over yourself.

I have two young children under three and a critical deadline due end of next week and everybody around me is sneezing, and my daughter looks like she’s getting ill too.

If I refused to “work with a sick person” my manager would be within his rights to tell me to fuck off and not to bother coming in again.

RaspberryBeret34 · 17/01/2019 13:31

I think it depends. If it's just a cold YABU, it's just one of those things and as long as she washes her hands lots (and you do same), it should be fine. If it's a vomiting bug then YANBU and there's no way she should be working in a pub, dealing with drinks and food with a bug like that.

Raspberry88 · 17/01/2019 13:33

If she has a sickness bug she absolutely should not be coming into work in a pub so maybe remind her of the 48hr rule.

CmdrIvanova · 17/01/2019 13:34

Not to be rude but you work in a pub. You are in direct or indirect contact with the general public for hours on end. Goodness knows what germs they're bringing in. At least you can ensure your colleague washes her hands.

user1483387154 · 17/01/2019 13:35

You are being ridiculous

CmdrIvanova · 17/01/2019 13:35

Oh does a sicky thing mean vomit? Surely she can't legally serve drinks with a stomach bug?

qazxc · 17/01/2019 13:39

cold type illness YABU. And to be honest you are just as likely to catch such an illness from a customer/ handling money.
If she has D&V type illness she should stay home though.

TheFaerieQueene · 17/01/2019 13:39

I imagine the customers in the pub will have all sorts of bugs at the moment. Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/01/2019 13:40

Cough or cold YABU, D&V YANBU.

Claracracksthenut · 17/01/2019 13:42

Unless actually being sick she will go in.
LOL come work for NHS. Stop being precious you work with the public they are all ill this time of year.

Sick relative phones ward and told “ stay at home look after yourself and don’t come in until you feel better” in nice kind sympathetic voice

Sick staff members “ FGS dose yourself up and come in we are short staffed already “ in fed up cross voice.

I’m not joking btw. Dying is only acceptable excuse at the moment where I work. Lemsip is on the tea tray in the staff room

PinkHeart5914 · 17/01/2019 13:46

It’s January a LOT of people have a cold, it goes with this time of year.

Many of your customers will be ill with a cold too

RandomUsernameHere · 17/01/2019 13:49

What Raspberry said

Tinkobell · 17/01/2019 13:51

You could point out that the punters wouldn't appreciate catching her lovely bug!

Darkautumn · 17/01/2019 13:54

YABU

You run the risk of catching something every time you leave the house/go to work /go to the doctors /kiss your kids/ get on a bus / pull a pint

CloserIAm2Fine · 17/01/2019 13:56

A cold YABU

A sickness bug YANBU but I would focus on the fact that she shouldn’t be serving food and drink with D&V rather than “I don’t want to work with a sick person”

frenchchick9 · 17/01/2019 13:57

A cold, YABU.
A sick bug?? YANBU at all and she should not be working in a customer-facing role or with food/drink if she's contagious!! Silly woman.

SilverySurfer · 17/01/2019 13:59

Go wrap yourself in bubblewrap and hide in a cupboard - you should be safe from germs then. Or you could behave like a normal person and deal with it.

YABU as anyone can and does go in a pub so you are bound to be more exposed. Go get yourself the flu jab and some hand gel and anti bac wipes for your end of the bar

ABoozedMoose · 17/01/2019 14:07

Oh please call in sick and tell your boss why. And then come back and tell us about your boss's reaction to 'I am not coming in on the off chance I catch the sniffles'.

How on earth do you cope with normal day to day things like shopping or catching a bus?

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 17/01/2019 14:08

YABU if it's just a cold. Just wash your hands regularly.

WinnieFosterTether · 17/01/2019 14:08

As PPs have said you work with the public. The manager won't be the only sick person in there. Hmm

FamilyOfAliens · 17/01/2019 14:14

@ABoozedMoose

You sound lovely.
