School contacted me to say, my DS had a detention because he didn't have the right equipment, when I enquired what it was he didn't have, they replied a green pen Hmm, he forgotten it.
I could understand a detention being given for a more serious matter. WWYD?

Honestly that's the most pathetic reason I've ever heard!

My DSS was given an after school detention for accidentally leaving his tie in PE - instead of the teacher letting him retrieve it at break he was given an hour long detention after school - DH was picking them up that day and was in no mood to make two trips (other DSSto pick up too) so didn't give the teacher any option but to take DSS out of detention and was told that under no circumstances would they be making him take the detention any other day as he had his tie back on again by the end of the day anyway! Sometimes common sense would be more useful than ott rules.

If I still had kids at school these petty rules made up by sadistic staff would have me demanding satisfaction from the head.
Do you complain to your poor kids’ schools or just grumble here? Do you feel you must keep quiet because of repercussions against your kids if you complain?
It is totally wrong that schools have this much control, which they misuse against the unfortunate students.

@LikeACowsOpinion Yes it does! I don’t like it, detention is a far better word!

I once got detention for not having a protractor, I think it's a fairly usual (if OTT in my opinion) punishment.
