Dog broody. Is this a thing?

Is being dog broody a thing?! I was never broody for kids but I am for a dog. I have three children, two have autism so I’m not sure adding to my life with a dog is a brilliant idea but that doesn’t stop me looking. It’s like a bizarre need. Has anyone else ever felt like this?

Yep. And I already have one. Blush
If you can’t commit to dog ownership could you walk for a rescue centre or something like the Cinnamon Trust.

BertieBotts · 16/01/2019 12:01

Animals are meant to be helpful for children with disabilities. I don't think it's an awful idea. Why not visit your local rescue and see what they have to say, whether a dog could fit into your life?

crivit · 16/01/2019 12:02

Oh god yes. For years. However I haven't been in a position to bring any dogs into my home for that time. This will change but for now I just look at rehoming websites and sigh.

Darkbaptism · 16/01/2019 12:04

Yes, now have a dog! I also have 3 children, 2 have autism. The puppy is an amazing addition to our family.

When I was pregnant with DS1 I craved cats Hmm I just really wanted to stroke one all the time.

NC4Now · 16/01/2019 12:06

Yes. I was cat broody for years. Now I’ve got my lovely boy I can’t imagine life without him. He’s brought so much happiness to my family.
I’d love a puppy but I can’t give it the right amount of care and attention at the moment. We’ll get one in the future when I can. I always look too!

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 12:07

My ds was-from the moment he knew what a dog was. It was like a need. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself.

werideatdawn · 16/01/2019 12:11

Yep definitely a thing. I couldn't cope any longer and we got a dog and she's amazing. She is my favourite child and comes pretty much everywhere with us, I'm totally obsessed. Its chaos as we have three kids under 6 but no regrets.

Monr0e · 16/01/2019 12:30

I was dog broody for 2 years after my last dog had to be pts.

I would regularly look at local rescue centres even though we couldn't realistically take one on. Then we accidentally acquired a rescue cat and we all completely fell in love with him.

I still smile and aw at every dog we meet but for now we are quite content with our boy.

KateGrey · 16/01/2019 12:34

And I thought I was a bit odd. I’m home all day so in reality the dog wouldn’t be left alone and to be honest we don’t tend to really go far. Mainly outdoors as it’s better for the kids.

Yes. My cat is 17 so I wouldn't have a dog at the moment.

I do have a neighbour's dog some days though.

Onwardsandupdwards · 16/01/2019 12:38

I’m almost constantly dog broody - which is why I have three!

I need to constantly talk myself down. If I had a huge house & lots of money, I’d have 10!

amusedbush · 16/01/2019 12:39

Yes! I have no maternal instinct at all, no desire for a child or interest in other people's but I'd love another dog. I get misty eyed looking at photos of DDog as a puppy Blush

EleanorAbernathy · 16/01/2019 12:40

I get kitten broody quite regularly Grin

IsItThatTimeAgain · 16/01/2019 12:41

I'm cat broody.

KateGrey · 16/01/2019 12:46

Animal broody is a thing then. I wonder why. I adore my kids but there’s something about animals. My husband thinks I’m bonkers.

I’m so dog broody, I often peruse online rescue sites and wish we had a garden so we could adopt. Not sure our car would be impressed, but I like to think she’d come around.

bilbodog · 16/01/2019 12:51

We sadly lost our gorgeous boy last march and i am very broody for another one, but we are trying to move house so it is sensible to wait until we have done so. Being sensible is very boring though!

snurguzelly · 16/01/2019 15:01

It's weird. As weird as calling them children or furbabies or referring to yourself as a mother or parent to a pet.

Your husband's correct.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/01/2019 15:07

I've been bicycle-broody (as someone who hadn't cycled for 20+ years). Dog- and cat-broody is definitely normal in comparison Grin

FiggyFudgePot · 16/01/2019 15:15

Dog broodiness is deffo a thing. Smile
Do your homework first though to prevent a whole heap of heartache and expensive vet bills.

DH was cat broody for years. D
He was soooooo happy when we got a cat. The whole house seems a happier place with a pet. 😀

BlueKarou · 16/01/2019 15:56

Oh it's so much a thing! I have two wonderful dogs (and a toddler) and know I'm at capacity for my lifestyle, house, etc... Doesn't stop me trawling through the rescue pages. The key thing is knowing whether or not to act on the broodiness. I do also get baby broody occasionally, but mostly it's for another dog!

MillicentSnitch · 16/01/2019 15:57

Have you seen borrowmydoggy.com?

Dahlietta · 16/01/2019 16:07

Yes, definitely a thing! But it sounds to me OP that rather than not being a great idea, a dog might be just the thing to add to your life Grin
