Christmas decorations is this strange?

First of all this has no effect on my life at all but aibu to think you don't keep Christmas decorations up for ages?
My next door but one neighbour has her tree up fully decorated in her front window and flashing lights outside plus a holly wreath on her door and glo in the dark candy canes with a sign saying santa stop here!
Each day she goes in and out cheerfully past it all.
I m superstitious and always think you should bring everything down and put away by twelfth night.
I m now wondering if they will still be up in July Grin.....

We had our decs up on Dec 2nd, went away Dec 14th-Jan 6th, then had family around at the weekend for a proper Christmas (in Asia for the day, so no 'real' Christmas there).

My parents only put up their decorations on Christmas Eve, and had them up til Twelfth Night when we were kids.

Now they leave them up until February, and have been known to leave the (still green) real tree up until Easter to be redecorated as an Easter tree.

I love fairy lights especially coming back from work in the dark.
She's got dc school age so I would think the Santa stops here sign s a bit confusing?

I probably should take ours down but haven't got round to it. There's only one string of solar bulbs in the hedge and a couple of bits of tinsel on the light fittings anyway - we went away for Christmas so I only put out a minimum (enough to make the house look occupied...)

Whisky2014 · 16/01/2019 13:05

My wreath is still on my front door. Only yesterday I took some tinsel down. I still have a Christmas shoe mat at the front door and our doorbell is still ringing jingle bells. I'm knackered and I just can't be arsed dealing with it. We rarely use the front door so it's never in my mind. Today 2 different neighbours came to my door and I have to say, I did feel embarrassed. But not enough to sort it :D

Christmas isn't over the day after Boxing Day. It continues until at least 6th January. I would argue that Christmas doesn't actually start until Christmas Eve.

It is over for me! I normally get rid of everything by the 27th, because once Santa has come, Christmas is done.

I agree about the start, but I like to get into the Christmas spirit from the 01 December.

recklessruby · 16/01/2019 13:14

*@angelicwings*thank you for that. I always wondered where the superstition came from!

A couple of people on my street have kept their garden lights up which actually looks very nice. The tree is pushing it a bit though...

recklessruby · 16/01/2019 13:18

Garden lights are fine. After all we put them up for summer parties outside.
Santa stops here and Christmas tree a bit weird.

My mum left her tree up once until March when we had a belated Christmas gathering for my sister who’d come home after travelling for years. She did move it out of the window though!

moredoll · 16/01/2019 13:20

If you don't take them down on Twelfth Night you're meant to leave them until Candlemas (2 February) to avoid bad luck.

Birdsgottafly · 16/01/2019 13:25

I like sitting with the Christmas decorations up, after all the stress is over and done with.

I've used the Feb thing as an excuse. I'm putting my tree away today, but only because I'm getting my kitten done and I need the room. Plus she climbs it, so thays no good for recovery.

The rest I'll leave up till Feb.

The living wreath that I bought is staying on my door. I see it as a Winter decoration. I celebrate Christmas as a Winter Festival.

recklessruby · 16/01/2019 13:26

@moredoll didn't know that. My birthday is 26 January and as a kid I always felt it was unfair that the decorations had to come down before my birthday!

I really hate this. Is depressing!

justasking111 · 16/01/2019 13:28

I am silently mad at OH. I had left some twinkly lights up on the staircase, the barsteward took them down and put them in the loft. I guess I should have said something, but I did tell him to butt out re: the removal of decorations.

Pk37 · 16/01/2019 13:31

It’s bugs me but I know it’s irrational..
2 of my neighbours keep their lights up year round just not turned on . I just think it’s so lazy Blush

justasking111 · 16/01/2019 14:07

PK our outside lights took two hours to put up on the gables, on a freezing day with me holding the ladder at the bottom and OH precariously balanced across the front of the house. If you expect us to take them down, you are unreasonable.

Pk37 · 16/01/2019 19:54

so you just leave them up all year ?
If they’re that much of a hassle why put them up in the first place ?

Snowydaysaregreat · 16/01/2019 20:09

The family below me stull have theirs up and switched on.. They do every year till late Jan. Not sure why?
