Currently trying to save money and eat healthier so batch cooking and food prepping. Ate well today with some cereal and then at teatime had some baked ham, mash, carrots and celery but right now all I want to do is order a Dominos both pizza wings and a dessert (I'd prefer a kebab tbh but theres no decent ones here) but instead I have the option of spiced celeriac and parsnip soup and a bread roll or some breadsticks if I want a proper meal.

So AIBU to really want a takeaway pizza, wings and either the sweet dough dip things or the chocolate because sometimes it's nice to just have what you want with no effort, even if I know I wont actually eat it all because I'm not that hungry and knowing that it'll mess with my budget and health plans.

I've not ordered it but I have moved the money I would have spent into my savings account.

Thanks now I want a takeaway 😭 (Im on a diet)

AwakeNow · 16/01/2019 02:46

Resist! Have a ham sandwich instead.

Buntybearbess · 16/01/2019 03:00

Sorry @whatsthepointthen, it's so hard when you just want something because you want it but you can't have it because you've told yourself no.

@AwakeNow, I tried the soup, too spicy so that'll be added to the veg soup that's in the slow cooker or used as a curry base Grin I can't afford to waste the food. I'm hoping to resist by having some crackers with butter and sliced radishes, which I realise sounds odd but I love the combo, plus the extra ham/meats have all been divvied up and frozen for meals later this week. It sucks that being a responsible adult means thinking things through and making a decision based on consequences rather than an attitude of I want it so I'm going to get it.

Can you add some yoghurt or cream to the soup to cool the spice a little?

Going through similar atm, we never do a big shop but I'm tired of arguingover what we're eating and who's going to shop for it nearly every day, then resorting to takeaways when both too lazy so bought loads of food in and now all I can think about is Pizza.

JasperKarat · 16/01/2019 06:27

Make cheese on toast with tomatoes and some of the baked ham shredded, it's a bit like pizza, not completely healthy but much better than takeaways and free as you have the ingredients

Meangirls36 · 16/01/2019 16:43

When I want pizza I get a nice frozen pizza and add more toppings and cheese and make a really nice salad to go with it and some still lemonade

Loopytiles · 16/01/2019 16:50

Seems like you might be in a mindset that not choosing takeout is some kind of deprivation.

Presumably you’re avoiding it because you wish to eat fewer calories/less fat, have more nutritious food, and / or save money. If having it is more important to you than those things, fair enough!

SillyLittleBiscuit · 16/01/2019 16:56

I reckon the minute you eat the Dominos you'll regret it. I give in to takeaway cravings all to often and, whilst it's great when eating, I rarely think it's worth the money or calories when it's gone.

PickAChew · 16/01/2019 16:57

If I was craving pizza, it wouldn't be dominoes.

Longdistance · 16/01/2019 16:58

Imagine the money you’d save not buying the pizza, which is in fact well overpriced for a bit of dough, tomato sauce and cheese.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 16/01/2019 17:03

You can make your own pizza!

I don't think we ever buy take-away, mainly because the kids are going to parties so often they eat enough junk food that way. I am not restricted to healthy soup though!

If you are trying to diet, plan a naughty meal on Saturday.

If you are trying to save money, allow yourself some food you really like. My very lazy meals are omelettes or jacket potatoes drowning in cheese, not exactly slimming for the latest, but they require pretty much 0 cooking.
Or allow yourself something nice for pudding.

Moominfan · 16/01/2019 17:07

Go for long term satisfaction op

catmumof1 · 16/01/2019 17:26

Get it on Friday/Saturday, it'll taste even better after a few more days of craving!

Buntybearbess · 16/01/2019 19:37

@Cleffa, I get that. Sometimes it's unavoidable (due to poor planning on my part), but it's always when I have food that I could eat or cook that I want it. I'm going to buy in some natural yoghurt to cool the soup each time I defrost some of it, but some of it will be used as a curry base because it would work quite well like that.

@JasperKarat, oh now that's my lunch for tomorrow sorted Grin

@Meangirls36, now that's a better idea. It'll probably taste better than the overpriced Dominos as well tbh.

@Loopytiles, that's the problem. I do value my health and my pocket more than I want a takeaway, but sometimes you just want something because you want it and logic doesn't make that go away. Like now, where I'm not having it, but I want it so instead I'm eating veggie sticks and fruit and some crackers.

@SillyLittleBiscuit, very much so. I find takeaways the same as going out drinking, great while your doing it but you regret it and the wasted money the next day.

@PickAChew, it was more the wings tbh, but I'd of ordered a pizza as well. Where I live Dominos is the only reliable pizza/takeaway that is open all night and won't give you food poisoning. If I were at my mums it'd of been one of two kebab places that do the best kebabs that aren't dripping in grease for great prices with a great hygiene rating.

@Longdistance, I transfered the money I'd of spent to my ISA. I've decided whenever I get the urge to spend stupid amounts of money I'm going to transfer the money I'd of spent to my ISA and see how quickly it mounts up and put it towards my summer holiday spending instead. Which is one of the reasons I need to lose some weight. I'm going on a theme and water park holiday with my best friend who is a healthy weight and our two very very fit and attractive male friends and I'm going to be the pudgy odd one out anyway so I want to lessen that effect as best I can. (They won't and don't care but it's my own confidence).

@DonCorleoneTheThird, love a good jacket potato. I swap between that and soup or salad and sandwiches for lunch. I think the treat meal is a good idea. I generally do hearty but healthy dinners with plenty of veg but I think a treat meal or pudding will be a good idea.

@Moominfan, that's what I'm aiming for tbh, saving money and losing a little weight.

@catmumof1, I think I'm gonna buy in some frozen pizza and some chicken wings and marinade them so I can have something that I crave when I crave it for a fraction of the price instead. So Friday night will be pizza and homemade hot wings for me I think.

The savings idea is a really good one.

A couple of books have read on this, eg Gillian Reilly or Brain over Binge suggest that we’re all dealing with cravings, our brains’ more primeval and less rational sides, and can get more practiced at acknowledging the urges and not acting on them. Deprivation, eg restricting calories, regarding some foods as “naughty” can make this harder.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/01/2019 13:26

Your solution to just get these things from the supermarket is probably the best compromise.

I'm not really sure I understand the point of Domino's to be honest. It's crap pizza and if you're going to have crap pizza you might as well have it for a fraction of the price from the supermarket, and it's not like shoving a pizza and some wings in the oven is any effort at all really.

If I'm paying restaurant or takeaway prices for food, it needs to be bloody good and something that takes effort and/or lots of time/ingredients, not something I can just buy from the supermarket and throw in the oven/microwave.

Meangirls36 · 17/01/2019 15:27

Wings are very cheap just dose in your favourite barbeque sauce and then roast or deep fry then just add your favourite dip. Wings are like £1.50 a pack .

Moominfan · 17/01/2019 20:33

I wish I felt the same way towards supermarket pizza but I just love dominos and Pizza Hut. On occasion my other half has got one from a supermarket and I've hated them. Just can't compare

Eliza9917 · 17/01/2019 20:42

Yanbu

Meangirls36 · 18/01/2019 00:59

There's a recipe for pizza hut like pizza. You need to get fluffy pizza dough and oil the pan when you put the pizza on. Its on imgur/reddit but its very complicated. Pizza hut has probably got msg or something addictive in it. The dips have buttermilk in them. Soo bad for you. I know when I've had enough carbs/fat when I crave salad and some fresh fruit:) just portion control it and you'll be OK.

Meangirls36 · 18/01/2019 01:00

Also always get the deals never just order off the menu.

Buntybearbess · 18/01/2019 02:49

Yup to deals. I'm bulk buying wings when my shelf in the freezer is emptier and then making some ready to go wings of different flavours/spice levels and that way I'll be good to go when my cravings for 'junk' kick in. Will also probably buy a frozen pizza base and build my own when I want it. I think I part of me wanting to order junk right now comes from just feeling a bit low and stressed and also laziness as all of my seminars finish after 6 so I don't get in till almost seven and I just cba to cook or make a proper meal, so have just been eating crackers, crisps, cereal and the like instead.
