Even though it's a very weak prescription? My eyes get so sore and tired and I have to reeeeaaallly try to focus sometimes.

I had +4 as a child that has inproved to +1.5 and +0.75. If I don't wear specs, my eyes get sore, I get headaches and I feel tired. Also I can see the same out of both eyes with glasses, and that ia much preferable.

ErickBroch · 15/01/2019 22:14

I am only a -0.5, so barely anything, and I still wear them pretty often. I have long walks to and from work I need them for, for the cinema, theatre, anything further away that I don't want to be fuzzy really.

irunlikeahipoo · 15/01/2019 22:16

I had my eyes lasered years ago but recently noticed I was squinting when watching tv
Had my eyes tested and while the optician said I had 20/ 20 vision my left eye is 0.5 and recommended I wear glasses for reading and driving

At least this time when I picked my glasses I was actually able to see what i looked like when wearing them 😂

zod1ac19 · 15/01/2019 22:16

Why would you ever think that is unreasonable? Confused

Wonkypalmtree · 15/01/2019 22:18

I wouldn’t wear them full time if I was you. Your muscles can correct some of your issues now, they won’t be able to For long as you age. I have awful eyesight, I would love +1

InfiniteCurve · 15/01/2019 22:19

How old are you? (The older you are the harder it is for the eyes to focus,if you are longsighted then you have to work harder to focus anyway, the older you are the more likely it is that a relatively low plus prescription will help your vision)
But if they help you, wear them! +1 is low but not that low. Why would you not wear them?

Cheeseandapple · 15/01/2019 22:25

@InfiniteCurve @zod1ac19 I asked because I went to the optician on Sunday and she said it was such a weak prescription it wasn't worth wearing glasses.

Right, I'm off to find out what my face shape is...

I wear glasses (and contacts) and my prescription is -1.5. It's a weak prescription but I can't drive safely without them or read small print (e.g. TV guide on the TV). I can however get away without them quite easily just moving about the house and I don't need them for the computer at work.

WonkoTheSane42 · 15/01/2019 22:36

Your optician knows better than a bunch of randoms on an internet forum.

zod1ac19 · 15/01/2019 23:14

Try some, if they help wear them. If not don’t worry about it. It may be that they help just for certain situations, up close or far away etc.

If you don’t want to spend a fortune to find out try somewhere like glassesdirect online who are great.

Talkingfrog · 15/01/2019 23:30

It may be a weak prescription but if your eyes are getting sore/tired maybe your body is telling you they are needed. Did your optician know your eyes were getting tired when he suggested not bothering?
I am short sighted with a complex prescription (somewhere around - 12 I think). My optician will sometimes say there is not much change, and so not to get new lenses just because of the difference, but will ask if I have been having any problems. If I plan getting new frames anyway they will use the new prescription.

bellabasset · 15/01/2019 23:34

If your eyes are sore do you have dry eyes. It is more common among women than men especially after the menopause?

Are your eyes itchy, run in bright sunlight?

alphajuliet123 · 15/01/2019 23:40

OP, I bought some +1 glasses from Poundland after my optician said the same, and they're brilliant for reading cooking instructions and other tiny writing. Makes a huge difference for those moments when my arms aren't quite long enough! Worth a try for a quid.

Justajot · 15/01/2019 23:53

I started wearing glasses at about +1. I needed them for lectures and was told that I didn't need to wear them all the time. However I found that I did wear them all the time because it is much nicer to be able to see really clearly. I'd go ahead and get the glasses.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 16/01/2019 00:01

After wearing glasses for nearly 30 years, at my last appointment I was told I really don't need them any more! My prescription is -0.5 and - 1, which actually over corrects for me. Optician told me to wear them for driving (although not required for licence purposes) and if my eyes get tired or sore. I miss my specs Sad

Findingmyfizz · 16/01/2019 00:31

I'm pretty sure that what your optician will have meant is it's not worth getting specific prescription specs (I say this as someone who used to work as a dispenser/sales bod in one of the major names on the high street) as others have said straightforward +1 glasses are readily available for next to no money in lots of places, just go with those.

A +1 script does mean you need them to help avoid the headaches etc but you do not need a specific prescription so off the peg should do the job nicely

Findingmyfizz · 16/01/2019 00:36

It's also kinda irrelevant sometimes how 'weak' the prescription is. It's different strokes for different folks - for some a +/- 0.5 might be nothing, for others it's huge

OwlBeThere · 16/01/2019 00:43

My son and daughter both have a -1.5 prescription, she rarely wears hers except for it she’s at the back of the room in class, he wears his most of the time and says they really help. So do what works for you.

Cheeseandapple · 16/01/2019 09:55

Ahh interesting what pp said about getting them off the shelf cheap and maybe that's what the optician meant.
I'm 30, not menopausal and although I'm quite creaky I'm not past it.
Thanks everyone.

The thing which causes me trouble is the "prism" - it's the muscles that bring the eyes together to focus on one point. Without a prism correction, it's hard work, and when I relax my eyes drift apart slightly and give me double vision. With a prism correction, the glasses do the hard work for me. Did your prescription include a prism correction?

TurtleEyes · 16/01/2019 10:43

I work in an opticians (not an optometrist though) with small prescriptions we always say try them and wear them for whatever you feel they help with (and the usual legalities around driving etc) some people will wear them more than others and if you start with one cheapish pair you can buy more at anytime of you find you are wearing them regularly and want to leave pairs around or just want other colours etc.
I wouldnt advise pound land ones though for a few reasons.
Firstly you say you are +1.00. Do you have a cyl as well? If so ready readers won't have this part in and can make a difference to how much it will help.
Secondly, they won't be made to measure. Lenses have an optical centre which should be lined up with your pupils which again can make a difference to your vision in them if they don't.
Thirdly, proper fitting specs are just so much more comfortable!
Full disclosure, I've worn specs for almost 25 years and I hate my job, on mat leave trying to find another so I'm not saying this because it's the speil (though Tbf my managers are pretty good at right product for the person rather than money in the till)

Scubalubs87 · 16/01/2019 11:34

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t get glasses. My prescription is - 1.25 and I wouldn’t be without mine. I initially bought them mainly for watching the telly and driving but I wear them most of time or wear daily contact lenses. I like being able to see clearly and not having a headache by the end of the day. Get the glasses.

Shoppingwithmother · 16/01/2019 11:44

Off the shelf glasses are reading glasses for people with presbyopia (difficulty wiTh close work due to age. If you’re 30, you do not have presbyopia, +1.00 is your distance prescription. Ready made reading glasses are shit, for a number of reasons - some mentioned already, but they are not even designed for your problem.

Presumably you told the optician the problems you were having? If you are not happy without glasses, you could speak to them again and clarify matters. Don’t just go and get Poundland reading glasses and wear them though.

Shoppingwithmother · 16/01/2019 11:47

Scuba, -1.00 is totally different to +1.00. A young person (inc a 30year old!) can see perfectly well without glasses if they are +1.00, but probably not be legal to drive without if they are -1.00. I don’t know why you would feel in a position to say “get the glasses” when the optician who tested the OP’s eyes said she didn’t need them.... I’m sure you know better than them though...
