..to hope Theresa May loses the confidence vote even though I like her

I mean, I didn't like her deal but I think she is a brave, tough woman. But not being as brave myself, if I were her I'd be longing to lose tomorrow's vote so I could spend the next 10 weeks basking on a beach in Thailand while Boris and his ilk try and negotiate with the ^%&$ EU?

Right, we have no majority for ANY one Brexit deal, even if we have a majority for the general concept of Brexit. But let's not forget, the EU also have 27 countries who will have to fall behind any deal... We are playing chicken with Brussels and it's a question of who blinks first.

And why are our media not making more of the deal Merkel and Macron announced last week, namely that Germany and France intend to control the EU from now on? (Did no one else even notice that one? The one where France and Germany agreed to talk in advance of every future EU vote, firm up their joint vote, and impose it on the other smaller EU nations? the one where they agreed Germany, rather than the EU, should get a permanent UN Security seat?)

I think the EU will die because of the Franco-German deal anyway, if Italy or Greece can't kill it. This is its League of Nations moment. With luck there's some version of the UN ahead... meanwhile, Thai beaches for May! Yeah!

YABU for liking her. There's a thin line between bravery and stubborn ignorance, she crossed it aaaaggggess ago!

Buttercreamissuper · 15/01/2019 20:56

Yanbu OP.
I like her!

onalongsabbatical · 15/01/2019 21:00

You like the woman who set out to create a hostile environment for immigrants? And set herself against supporting the police?

Tolleshunt · 15/01/2019 21:00

YABU, kamikaze stubbornnesss to the point of rank pig-headedness in the face of all evidence is not a quality to admire.

CoughLaughFart · 15/01/2019 21:02

There was nothing brave about the way she mortgaged this country to the DUP - a bunch of backwards-thinking bigots - in order to desperately cling on to power. It hasn’t even helped her in the end.

The only reason I wouldn’t want her to lose the vote is because I dread the idea of who we’d get instead. Boris would be bad enough, but God forbid it’s Rees-Mogg.

brizzledrizzle · 15/01/2019 21:14

I don't because we'd end up with Jacob Rees Mogg.

Muminho · 15/01/2019 21:15

YABU to think that whether you 'like' Mrs May is relevant. Today the vote was on the Withdrawal Agreement and tomorrow it's on the government. These are the things you need to think about. Not whether you 'like' a person you don't know. All I can say is Brexit looks a lot less likely tonight and that's a good thing in my book.

partinor · 15/01/2019 21:15

You would rather have Boris? Seriously this is the future of our country

EwItsAHooman · 15/01/2019 21:20

I don't feel the slightest bit sorry for her. She's a grown woman who took this job willingly and then proceeded to well and truly fuck it up beyond all repair by stubbornly blundering along, ignoring all sensible advice, and relying on soundbites instead of actual plans. She is a prize fucking bellend and deserves every last ounce of stress and anxiety that this situation will bring her.

Standandwait · 15/01/2019 21:26

😁No, that's my point, I don't think Boris would do better. Or even Corbyn, or Farage. And I know, I am bring a bit frivolous about a serious mess. But... I don't think May made the mess. She voted Remain, darn it (as did I)!

Anyone dumb enough to want to take over now is too dumb to run a country. QED!

A third of her party did not support her. The biggest defeat in history for a government.

Trouble is who the alternatives are.

Standandwait · 15/01/2019 21:30

Also, at least having to be PM might put a dent in Boris's overactive sex life, n'est-ce-pas? Grin

After May’s historical defeat, I struggle to see how she can possibly cling on. But I’m damned if can see who can lead the country instead.

partinor · 15/01/2019 21:32

More likely to be Gove than Boris imo

Edgeworth · 15/01/2019 21:36

I hope she wins even though I don't like her (I typically vote Labour but at the moment want whatever will avert Brexit).

Her deal is dead, in parliament at least. If she sticks around I think a second referendum (remain vs her deal) is the most likely outcome, with no deal still a possibility.

If she loses and we have another GE, I don't see any party enjoying a huge majority. We'll either be stuck where we are now, or have a Corbyn-led government trying to cobble together a new deal, which will likely have the same fate in parliament as TM's deal.

I really wish Labour could oust Corbyn or he could at least get behind a second referendum.

partinor · 15/01/2019 21:47

Corbyn won't get in. I am more left wing than him. It will be someone more right wing than May,

BlueJava · 15/01/2019 22:04

I think she is about wanting what she thinks the country and the people want... for that I admire her (most are just in it for themselves and I don't think she is like that). But for me she's crossed a line - and she seems to have ignorantly pursued something which is fundamentally incorrect.

StoneofDestiny · 15/01/2019 22:08

Agreed - but since she has lost the fact remains the Tories and DUP will regroup to keep in power. More interested in party than country.
