To think 40a is still bra size?

I've recently lost 4 stone. Still fairly solid and chunky but I've never had huge boobs even when breastfeeding, never went above a C cup! I do have a massive ribcage though. Went to M&S to get measured for a new bra. I'm a 40A!! I didn't even think that was a real size! I'm fat with teeny tits! Who knew!

R&P don't charge for measurements, no. They charge enough for the bras to not need to!

And you'll get a free coffee.

KatharinaRosalie · 15/01/2019 20:42

Python 37AA would mean you are totally flat, underbust and overbust measurements exactly the same. If that's not the case, have you tried the links posted above?

StowawayJo · 15/01/2019 20:42

44D m&s

38HH bravissimo

My tits look and feel amazing now and no more strap marks, soreness etc after wearing a bra for the day now. Once I knew the size I bought one at the time from bravissimo then went onto brastop and got loads! So much cheaper but the same decent brands. Good luck OP!

Haworthia · 15/01/2019 20:42

This is really interesting, thank you for all your input...how can teeny boobs be a big cup though? DD/E?

I think we’ve been conditioned to believe that small boobs = A cup and big boobs = DD cup. But it’s not as simple as that. I’m really interested to see what size you are according to the Better Bra Campaign Grin

Buteo · 15/01/2019 20:43

M&S tell me I’m 38B. I’m not, I’m actually 34D.

pattyhoo · 15/01/2019 20:44

M&S sizing is rubbish!! They told me I was a 34D, then I got measured by bravissimo and I was actually a 28GG! All of my clothes looked better straight away 😊

@StatisticallyChallenged

Yes, former female bodybuilder. My muscular shape still causes me headaches to this day Grin

throughtheeyeofaneedle · 15/01/2019 20:46

I used the Triumph fitting guide and haven't been so comfortable in ages.

BayandBlonde · 15/01/2019 20:50

@StatisticallyChallenged

Like another poster, I don't bother with bras now. Just go with sports bras instead

Drogosnextwife · 15/01/2019 20:53

I am definitely going to try on bras with that guide upthread, I'm in a 34 DD right now but after reading this I think I may be wearing bras around 4 cup sizes too small and possibly a back size too big.

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/01/2019 20:54

That makes sense BayandBlonde - you'll understand why in most cases the combo of size 8 and 34 rings alarm bells for dodgy fit as it's not a typical physique. Weightlifting, lots of rowing, that kind of thing can change it obviously.

For me a sports bra is industrial scaffolding Grin

ClumsyPickle · 15/01/2019 20:55

Quite a helpful visual guide

I remember going I to la senza, if anyone remembers them, wearing a 34 d after having had my ds, wasn't really in to get measured but she offered, she brought me in a 32 b and looked a bit perplexed when I said I couldn't fit I to it.

cantkeepawayforever · 15/01/2019 21:00

Having done the M&S to Bravissimo transition (and taken teenage DD to Bravissimo so that she never goes down the wrong bra route!) I would say that the 'feel' of putting on a properly fitted bra is very, very different from that of an improperly fitted one.

Initially, for me, this difference was NOT a good thing. It felt tighter, scratchier, more confining, 'too small', less comfortable. But that was because it was actually doing something - containment, control, dare I say it a certain amount of uplift?

Do bear in mind that 'feeling too tight' may not mean that the size is too small, just that you're not used to what a fitted bra feels like. Just like a baggy sloppy jumper feels 'comfy' vs a tailored structured suit, an ill-fitting too loose bra can feel 'comfortable' while still being 'the wrong size'.

Dhalandchips · 15/01/2019 21:03

justkeepswimming acrimonious split from stbx and stopped eating sugar! It's taken 18 months.

OP posts:
AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 15/01/2019 21:06

I'm very flat-chested - don't wear a bra day to day. The ones I do have are around 34B. I tried the intervention method thing I saw on here and came out as something like a 28F Shock

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 15/01/2019 21:08

Sorry about the split.... but wow! 4 stone in 18months!!! I want to do that!

delboysskinandblister · 15/01/2019 21:09

Well done OP! I bet you feel good getting that shifted. And the weight Wink. Defintely try John Lewis. Very old school service. If you prefer the no touching fitting try Bravissimo.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 15/01/2019 21:16

What bra size were you before your 4 stone loss? Congratulations by the way, good for you.

Dhalandchips · 15/01/2019 21:17

I used to do weightlifting competitively too (sorry if that's a drip feed) so I'm quite 'hench' as the teenagers say! I do feel better for losing so much but I've only dropped one dress size too. I'm going to aim to lose one more stone then I be the weight I was when I left school (decades ago) but according to the BMI system, I'll still be obese🤣🤣 I'm convinced there is such a thing as 'heavy bones' because even at abese, I have a scrawny ribcage, my collarbones poke out, my hip bones protrude yet I still am well covered elsewhere! I reckon that's contributed to the teeny tits as well. Not that I ever did steroids.

OP posts:
Dhalandchips · 15/01/2019 21:18

I've worn a 40c for years. Probably erroneously!

OP posts:
OlennasWimple · 15/01/2019 21:20

This idea that a DD is on any way large (it really isn’t if you’re wearing the correct bra size) is very old fashioned

Indeed

I blame the tabloids - especially the Sun - who try to claim that certain glamour models are a "busty 32D" when they are probably more likely to be a 28F

OlennasWimple · 15/01/2019 21:20

^^ I meant "a busty D cup"

redastherose · 15/01/2019 21:22

@Dhalandchips I'm convinced that 'heavy bones' is a thing too! I've been the same measurements as a friend before now, same height, fitted into the same clothes etc and still weighed more than a stone more!

Flaskfan · 15/01/2019 21:24

I look.back at photos from.my late teens, when my mum said I was a 36b and cringe. It makes me look weird and too busty. I worked out later I was 34d, then got measured at 32e. I'm tall with broad shoulders, but have a narrow back.
