To expect cyclists to actually cycle on the road or cycle path??

Am sick to death of them whizzing past me at dangerous speeds on the pavement! I'm profoundly deaf and don't hear them on the pavement so if I moved thinking there was nothing behind me, could cause a nasty collision as so many of them are going way too fast!

They don't seem to obey traffic lights either!!

or just on the cycle path when there is one instead of the road. in cambridge in the week they were doing police patrols and fining them in pedestrian areas, going the wrong way down onw way streets, cutting red lights - bet it doesn't last though.

2shoesishappy · 29/06/2007 21:28

lets hope the lazy drivers who use the cycle lanes as parking spaces get fined to

Bibis · 29/06/2007 21:28

Oh Chasing Squirrels, I used to live in Cambridge and it infuriated me that the cyclists thought they had right of way both on the roads and the pavements, many a time we had near misses with the children and the cycling students, I hope loads of them got fined

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2007 21:29

yup, fine the drivers parking in the cycle lanes aswell, nothing against that.

Bibis · 29/06/2007 21:30

2shoes I agree with you too, but 2 wrongs do not make a right and just cos they are pissed off cos people park where they shouldn't doesn't give them the right to mow pedestrians down

southeastastra · 29/06/2007 21:30

mm you're right.

though i saw a woman on a bike with one of those trailer things with a baby in it on a major road today and thought she'd be better off on the pavement

Bibis · 29/06/2007 21:31

SEA, where were you? Could have been me

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2007 21:31

what i dont get is some of the red light cutting that you see round here, they are a cyclist, the carthat is going through a green light is a CAR, who is the most vunerable?? not the car!

southeastastra · 29/06/2007 21:35

watling st was it you?

i did feel for the woman, she was pedalling like mad as you knew she was on a bend in the road and it's a bit of a race track

NotQuiteCockney · 29/06/2007 21:37

The funny thing is, from what I've read, it's safer to run lights, at least in London. The only way cyclists die in London is by being run over and dragged by big trucks turning left. Law-abiding cyclists who wait at the lights get smushed, but the ones who run lights, live. Aparently women cyclists are more likely to obey the law, and hence get smushed more than men.

I still don't run lights, and don't cycle on pavements.

Cyclists that jump the red lights really bug the sh*t out of me. If you're using the road then you obey the rules of the road. Simple

Unfortunately cars are allowed to park in a cycle lane (the red tarmac ones) unless there are standard double yellows.

heymammy · 29/06/2007 21:42

Oh dear...I'd be getting smushed then!

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2007 21:43

ekk, at that NQC, BUT would add that there aren't alot of big lorries in central cambridge at rush hour!

Bibis · 29/06/2007 21:44

Nope not me then SEA, I only cycle on the road if I have to and if it is safe to do so. I plan my route carefully and won't take the trailer if I think that it is unsafe for me and the dcs

NotQuiteCockney · 29/06/2007 21:44

Well, and although I don't run lights, I do watch out for lorries turning left, and I'm aware that they often can't see me. I'd rather let a lorry go, than get smushed by one.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2007 21:47

and i get equally annoyed about the cars that overtake the cyclists then immediately turn left, thereby cutting up said cyclist. just wait your turn you lazy twunt, you wouldn't do that to a car.

foxinsocks · 29/06/2007 21:47

tbh, I think children on bikes on the pavement are just as bad. But then again, I wouldn't want mine riding on the road. Tis not ideal.

Hmmm, kids have to cycle somewhere, both mine ride on the pavement. I don't know how or when I start getting DS1 on the road, but he's only five now, so I'm sure it's not now. (Well, I've had him on some very quiet roads with me, but there's no way he's going on real roads yet!)

Bibis · 29/06/2007 21:56

Cycle bells sounded once (or twice if pedestrian appears to be deaf), talking loudly to your companion or just saying 'excuse me' helps when children on pavement or shared cycle path.

2shoesishappy · 29/06/2007 21:56

children scare me full stop

scootermum · 29/06/2007 22:02

When I was driving to work a few months ago a cyclist went through a red light and I only narrowly avoided colliding with him by slammning on my brakes..(was heavily pg at the time so was pretty annoyed)Anyway later in the journey drew level with him at another set of lights and he spat on my windscreen and had a go at me for nearly killing him!But it was HIS fault..for going through a red light..gaaah!It still makes me totally furious to think about it..
Im all for cycling..I do it myself when not needing to drop kids off somewhere, but ruddy hell, whats happened to the cycling proficiency course?

julen · 29/06/2007 22:19

Why is it that cyclists in the wrong seem to invite so much more anger than car drivers in the wrong? I have been puzzled by this for years.

(I do cycle on the pavement, when with my 3 children. I do get off though when approaching pedestrians. There is just too much fast driving on the road I have to take to get to the safe bit.)

blueshoes · 29/06/2007 22:19

spat on your windscreen, scootermum? charming . How upsetting especially in your condition. Cyclists are incredibly vulnerable on the road. Sadly for him, it is only a matter of time ...
