To ask for help deciding what to put in my pantry?

I know it's a pretty 1st world problem, but I seem to have a mental block about where to start.

My kitchen is a great size with 96 cupboards (wall cupboards) and drawers on the bottom level (to save me bending too much). They range from 20cm to 80cm wide.
My pantry is in a room directly off the kitchen (near the fridge) and I've got shelving in there along with a drinks fridge (used for oversized stuff and drinks) and wine rack.

I can't decide what to put in there though. Atm, it's full of crap and I want to get organised now we've finished renovating, but I don't know where to start.

Do I put my baking tins, etc, in there?
Or tins, jars, packets etc?
Or a mixture of both?

Will attach a quick drawing of the whole space so that you can see where oven, etc, is in relation to the pantry and some photos (please excuse the mess) of the interior of pantry to show shelving space.

I'm also lucky to have a utility room a bit further away with a few cupboards for laundry/cleaning stuff and pet food, so I don't need too worry about where that goes.

Any advice/suggestions welcome.

It's like I'm paralysed with indecision.

Have you power points in the larder? If so I'd def have an appliance run there as Peace suggests, with tabletop appliances not needing to be lifted.

Whereas a hand mixer or a stick blender would live in the kitchen.

ScienceIsTruth · 21/01/2019 00:12

They're not all cupboards, there's a lot of drawers included in that number as it saves me bending and hunting for the stuff at the back.
I can't get it all in the photo, but you can see most of it in this shot. The pantry is in the left-hand corner of the picture. As you can see, it's not 100% finished yet.

Thanks, TheSpottedZebra, all good points for me to think about. I've only 1 double socket in the pantry.

That's a great idea about the trays. Atm, they're in a big drawer under the ovens, but I have to keep rifling through them, so it would make sense to just keep the most used ones there, and use something like filing trays/ boxes , separators or smaller drawers to keep the others easier to access in the pantry.

You're right about the glass containers being heavy when full, so I will look at lighter alternatives. I've already smashed 2 mugs today (hands go into spasm), so anything that makes accidents like that less likely can only be a good thing.

I dream of a pantry, in summer my veg tries to grow if it isn't n the fridge and the fridge isn't that big (HA property do can't change it)

I would use it for food that needs to be kept cool but not refrigerated so veg racks would be needed.

I also like to make pickles and chutneys so they would be in there. If you buy in bulk and decan then the 'bilk' items would be in there and the decanted item in the cupboard.

ScienceIsTruth · 21/01/2019 10:50

@RebeccaCloud9, The only problem with having so much worktop is that my dc and oh seem to think they can just dump all their crap on any empty surface.
It's clear in the photo, lol, but probably won't stay that way for long. I'm still training them to put stuff away when they've finished with it Hmm

sashh, I also love making pickles, jams and chutney (I make a lovely spiced jam and plum chutney, if I say so myself!), so I will use part of the pantry for the equipment as well as the finished goods. I'm lucky enough to have enough room in my fridge for all my fruit and veg, but that's definitely something to consider, so thanks.

I'd put in things like: mop bucket, vacuum cleaner, bulk purchases of pet food, loo roll, cleaning products, anything like that, small appliances, big pans, excess crockery etc that are only used occasionally.

I'd also think about storing things in the kitchen or pantry to save cluttering up the rest of the house, even if it seems a bit odd - you have a lot of cupboards there, might as well use them for something, but then again, is the rest of the house similarly spacious and cupboard festooned?

I thought we had a lot of kitchen cupboards, but you must have about twice as many as we do.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 11:00

Just seen the post about your DC crap, how about giving them a drawer and/or cupboard each for their stuff, assuming you don't actually need them for other things - I can't imagine being able to fill all those cupboards with kitchen things.

Habitrii · 21/01/2019 11:18

96 cupboards? Are you interested in adopting a 30 something who has a love of all things kitchen related Grin

I just go my kitchen redone and got a 2 cupboard tall pantry and I basically keep all food stuff in it. baking trays, cooking equipment things go in the kitchen cupboards and all the plates/bowls go in the dining room

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 11:19

I assumed that the 96 cupboards was a ridiculous over exagerration for comic effect, but looking at the pictures, it could actually be true in this case.

bobstersmum · 21/01/2019 12:22

Just popping in to say I am so jealous of your 96 cupboards.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 21/01/2019 12:45

I've got these storage containers and I love them
Sistema Bake it range, currently on offer in Robert Dyas (not to self BUY MORE OF THEM!)
Large 3.2 litre on left takes a bag of pasta, middle one just right for a bag of flour or sugar. Both include the scoop cup which is dead useful. Smaller size for things like couscous or lentils that ooze out of opened bags, they have pouring spouts.
They all have a shaped edge which makes them easy to grip if your hands are weak.

We have a large larder where all the food goes, literally everything except what's in the fridge and freezer. I absolutely love it. It's all visible which makes online food shopping so quick. We have vegetable racks, shelves for tins, pasta, baking stuff etc. Extra deep shelf for cereals all lined up. Spice racks, wine racks. I don't put non-food things in there, it's nice to have it all organised with just food. The kitchen cupboards and drawers are used for crockery, pans etc. Utility room for washing and cleaning stuff, hoover, ironing board, diy bits etc. Works really well.

ScienceIsTruth · 21/01/2019 17:08

Thanks for all the suggestions.

In my defence, they're not all cupboards. The only cupboards are the wall ones, and the ones around the fridge freezer and 2 under the island.
95% of the bottom ones are drawers, which is why it sounds like a lot.

ScienceIsTruth · 21/01/2019 17:12

@BreakfastAtSquiffanys, they look like the kind of thing I'm after.

@BarbaraofSevillle, Lol, sorry, all true. There's actually 98 doors & drawer fronts (mostly drawer fronts), but 2 of them don't open, and aren't usable, as they're hiding the extractor fan.

ScienceIsTruth · 21/01/2019 17:21

Lol, Habitrii, as long as I can swop you for my dc!

Scottishgirl85, I hadn't thought of putting all the food that doesn't need chilling or freezing, into the pantry, but that would certainly make it easier to see what I've actually got.

I think I've just got to put something in there and see if it works for me, and if it doesn't, then I'll change it until I find what does work.

On another sad fun note, I'm in the process of reorganizing my freezers and updating the list I keep on the door of each one, which tells you exactly what's in it, when it has to be used by and it's position within the freezer. My dc think I lead a very boring exciting life, lol.

96 cupboards ??? Almost one hundred cupboards in a kitchen ??? That can't be right.
What on earth do you put in them ?
I've had to go in my kitchen and count.
I have 13. Plus a small dresser.

ethelfleda · 21/01/2019 17:34

OP, I like your style. My kitchen is tiny but I love cooking! I dream of a range oven, big kitchen and pantry!
If it were me, I would have bags of dried goods (pasta, lentils, rice etc) and have the smaller Kilner jars in your actual kitchen - then you can keep refilling them.
I’d have a chest freezer that I could fill with batch cooked stuff from when I’ve been on a role
Cleaning supplies and mop and bucket etc
Rarely used recipe books
Rarely used serving dishes etc

Is there any natural light in there? Can you grow herbs?

BitOutOfPractice · 21/01/2019 17:38

I think I have just actually died of kitchen envy!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 21/01/2019 20:28

Glad you like them, I really recommend them. The grips make them very user friendly.
The big ones fit perfectly between my shelves.
The current offer makes them extremely good value

Greypaw · 21/01/2019 20:39

My pantry is used for any food that doesn't need to be in the fridge (except for butter, which keeps at just the right temperature on a slate shelf). So it's full of tins, pastas, baking stuff (flour, general ingredients), squash, drinks cans etc. It's nice to have it all in there as you can walk in and see exactly what you've got.

helpmum2003 · 21/01/2019 20:53

I'm very jealous!

I have one of these stackers from Lakeland which I use for baking trays etc

www.lakeland.co.uk/24334/Sturdy-Lid-and-Board-Store?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-JXiBRCpARIsAGqF8wXZTwJwydGvdFj2mMJZYdO_s8SN5OWzAXe6hma88GvJeCMYnWBjUycaAqlMEALw_wcB&src=gfeed&s_kwcid=AL!49!3!105382034789!!!g!43864943165!&ef_id=W2H9wwAAAFStfhCq:20190121205006:s

If I had your space I'd get another for pan lids and one for chopping boards.

I'm not sure what I'd keep in your pantry as the kitchen is so big and you have a utility!

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 21:25

Just counted. Our kitchen has 28 doors/drawers. Most of them are base unit with 2 deep drawers in, but we do have 6 full height cupboards too and an understairs pantry which is full of crap. The amount of storage is plenty.

I'm not posting a picture because the kitchen is quite distinctive and it's not clean or tidy enough to be seen on Mumsnet-- I CBA name changing.
