Just to ask about ganglion cyst aspiration

Has anyone had it done?
Doctor has referred me due to the constant pain and difficulty driving as it hurts constantly.
She said it’s extremely painful to have done and scared me off a little
I really need it done as the restricted movement and pain in my wrist is a pain, but I can’t help worry how painful it will be.

Is she over exaggerated it a little? Do I get an anaesthetic?

I shouldn’t have really posted on AIBU but thought best place to ask 😁

The brief pain will be worth it. You can handle it.

easyandy101 · 14/01/2019 12:46

Smack it with a bible

From what I've heard it's a painful procedure but if it's hindering you day to day then get it done

donajimena · 14/01/2019 12:48

easy I did actually do that Grin I think it might have been a readers digest. It did go eventually. I can't remember the timeline after the thumping though.

SolemnlySwear2010 · 14/01/2019 12:49

I have a recurring one on my wrist as well. The first time it appeared O used a very heavy book and got my DH to smack my wrist with it - it did burst the cyst for a while but it has now came back.

Luckily it isn't affecting me too much at the moment but I think i will need to go to the GP before the end of the year and see about getting the surgery (or get my DH to whack me again Grin )

Let us know how you get on!

I had mine aspirated in October, local anaesthetic stung as expected, no other pain really except a bit when he was digging deep but not too bad. Just like a dull ache....certainly wasn't agony or anything. Also just an ache afterwards for a couple of days. It hasn't come back yet.

jiskoot · 14/01/2019 12:54

Oh that was on the top of my hand by the way, not sure if it hurts more in other areas?

AnyFucker · 14/01/2019 12:55

I had one done on the front of my ankle

It bloody hurts actually as they don't use any local anaesthetic and the needle is wide bore. However, it did sort it.

lornski · 14/01/2019 12:57

Not aspiration but had mine surgically removed. Same reason - restricting movement of my wrist & impeding my driving. Out for the count, 30 minute op. 4 cm scar on wrist but not returned & been 4 years now. Glad I got rid as it was also affecting my confidence

Gumbo · 14/01/2019 12:59

I had one done a few years ago. I definitely wasn't given/offered any local anesthetic (I'm jealous, jiskoot) and it was indeed really painful. However - the majority of the procedure wasn't actually too bad, it was just at the end when he was pushing the needle deeper and squeezing the ganglion that it was particularly grim.. not helped by him to refusing to believe me or stop when I told him he was really hurting me Hmm

It was worth in in the long run though - it went away for several years although came back again after that

jiskoot · 14/01/2019 13:05

Ah that's weird, I had mine done privately (I work for a private healthcare company) but am shocked at the thought of it being done without local...! ouch

MaudAndOtherPoems · 14/01/2019 13:09

I had a recurring one which I used to whack with the office stapler (more precise aiming than a heavy book). It came back a few times and then went away for good, so I avoided the surgery.

NC0301191141 · 14/01/2019 13:35

Like a PP I had one surgically removed. It wasn't too big but it did restrict movement in my wrist.

Think my op (general anaesthetic) was 20 mins. Don't remember any pain though do remember nearly passing out the next day when I had to take the dressing off! It wasn't actually bad but I worked myself up in to such a state!

That was 17 years ago now. I have a scar from the op and a "dent" where the ganglion was removed but not massively noticeable. And more importantly it's never returned though I was warned that it could.

Writersblock2 · 14/01/2019 13:38

I had mine drained without local too. Wasn’t a huge deal. Went away and never came back (hoorah!).

Longdistance · 14/01/2019 13:49

I’ve a huge one on my foot. Well, I think it’s huge. I’ve had it about 3 years. It doesn’t hurt but It’s fucking ugly. I would like to get rid of it. It’s had a whack a few times, but nothing. Do I need a podiatrist?

R3b3kah · 14/01/2019 13:53

Thankyou all for the replies Smile

Seems the local anaesthetic don’t sound too promising, sham it’s hurting so bad otherwise I wouldn’t bother having it removed.

Waiting on a letter to come about the appointment, hopefully not too long

I'd think don't bother with aspiration because it comes back within days. Much the same with a professional thumping it (the bible thing leads to broken wrists so don't ever trust anybody with that).

Excision works for years. It hurts a bit, but compared to the constant pain of one in the wrong place, it's fine.
