to think Fortnite birthday cakes are

Not appropriate for 6 yr olds.

Can't post pictures as will probably out myself. Our local cake shop posted a gallery of recent kids cakes for popular themes. They are superbly decorated and beautiful cakes, we have always used them to buy our DC birthday cakes.

Many of the cakes were Fortnite themed. All for kids younger than 12, the games age restriction.

AIBU to think a 6 yr olds birthday cake shouldn't have grenades, machine guns, bricks, axes and various other weapons on top?

I get that many kids are learning the dances in the playground, so is my son 7, but he does not get to see game footage or play it. He certainly won't get a cake. WTF is wrong with these people who think PEGI age restrictions are simply a serving suggestion, like portion sizes. Rant over.

Hilarious misunderstanding of the word "skins" in relation to gaming. 🤣

secretmetoo · 13/01/2019 05:19

My DS7 loves fortnite and had a fortnite cake for his birthday. Brace yourselves ladies......he also has a fortnite duvet cover and lamp!!! gasp!!!!!

FixItUpChappie · 13/01/2019 05:54

I completely agree with you OP. Parents have gone mad IMO

U2HasTheEdge · 13/01/2019 06:04

The skin thing made me giggle Grin

I don't think the game is that bad for young children.

Idontlikepeas · 13/01/2019 06:31

I just don’t really understand how this is appropriate for small children. It’s essentially a game where you kill people and then do a dance to celebrate it.

Birdie6 · 13/01/2019 07:09

The local cake shop probably offers these cakes because there is a demand for them. So I guess some people buy them. No need to get upset about it - nobody is making you buy one.

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/01/2019 08:48

My 9 year old is fornite mad and his entire class plays it. Its done wonders for his confidence and friendships. Even his teacher has remarked on the positive effect it has had on the class.

I know some of the dance and other camps have an upper age limit of 12.

WhatNow40 · 13/01/2019 09:14

I thought the skins referred to different outfits so was quite shocked with the macabre description. Who the fuck says that kind of shit to a child?

Our local cake shop are definitely making these cakes to order, hence the AIBU. It's obviously in demand.

The info on PEGI ratings has baffled me. I thought it was similar to film ratings, in that you can easily tell what is in it to make it a 12 or an 18 etc. With the Hasbro gaming pack, it's a PEGI 12 but the individual games sold separately are 7 or 3. Except for Boggle, which I can't find on its own.

DS also loves Dan TDM and everything I see/hear is pretty safe. I've had to report and block some other gamers that make it through the YouTube kids filter. Swear words is a particular problem.

IMO the common sense media website is better than PEGI. I read the reviews and comments on there then watch gameplay on YouTube before saying yes/no to games.

Personally, the online nature of the game worries me more than the violence which is cartoony and not dissimilar to playing laser tag. It’s more a case of getting other players ‘out’ than graphically murdering them.

That said, I wouldn’t let a 6 year old play it Shock

secretmetoo · 13/01/2019 10:05

whatnow40 the skins do mean different outfits. You don’t steal them off dead bodies Hmm in fact there are no dead bodies to steal from, there’s no blood and guts or anything gory. When you shoot another player they lose health points until they are zapped from the game like a robot. Some people are very misled about the game as they just read and believe everything on Facebook.

EwItsAHooman · 13/01/2019 10:05

It’s essentially a game where you kill people and then do a dance to celebrate it.

Again, no worse than Minecraft where you can also kill people and animals in order to steal/scavenge their stuff.

EwItsAHooman · 13/01/2019 10:08

The game isn't graphic, when players are killed they sort of go 'poof' in a flash of light, no innards or skinning involved.

Sorry but YABU.My son is 9 and plays it, as do 90% of his friends. He also plays on line with some of the children of my internet friends all under 12. He plays in the living room fully supervised. It's not COD/GTA, I don't think its any worse than minecraft which I believe is PEGI 3? If you don't want a fortnite cake don't buy one.

milkysmum · 13/01/2019 10:18

My 7 year old ds plays fortnite along with Minecraft. I was hesitant at first but soon realised it was no where near as bad as I thought and literally 95% of his class play it also. 9 year old dd also plays now and again but prefers watching slime videos on YouTube! ( oh and ds had a fortnite themed party when he turned 7. )

ZenNudist · 13/01/2019 10:18

YABU. Just because they have fortnite merch doesn't mean they play the game. Ds1(8) isn't allowed to play (many of his friends do). He knows all the dances and teaches them to DS2(4). He has jumpers clocks, posters, t-shirts all sorts with fortnite logos and slogans on as MIL knows he likes it. Still isnt allowed to play.

Most people I speak to IRL say they wish they'd never let their dc play it as they are addicted and it causes arguments. So I am keeping him off it.

Cake is just cake. Dont think its any worse than having say a TNMT cake or marvel superheroes.

EwItsAHooman · 13/01/2019 10:18

My son plays a game he made up on Minecraft creative mode called "splat horse". It involves building a single block tower as tall as possible, standing on the top of it, and spawning horse after horse after horse over the side so that they fall straight down to the ground. Splat horse. It has variations including "splat cow", "splat pig", "splat zombie", and "splat chicken". I'm sure he's learning something about gravity and velocity but mainly he's splatting pixels because he thinks it's funny.

Minecraft is rated 7.

GruciusMalfoy · 13/01/2019 10:19

I made my son a Fortnite cake for his 10th birthday, no guns or grenades on it though.

It isn't my favourite game he plays, but all his friends are playing it too, so he would be missing out. He already has ebough struggles socially, so if this brings him some common ground, fine.We watched YouTube playalong videos, and it didn't seem graphic to me. Certainly no more so than Minecraft or Terraria, which is what he usually plays.

HugAndRoll · 13/01/2019 10:20

Any game with an online element has to be PEGI 12 and above. The actual game is completely fine. I also let my 10 year old play Overwatch for similar reasons; I wouldn't let them play something that's over a PEGI 12 though.

I guess the difference is that I'm a gamer and have played these games myself before letting my children have a go (in the same way a lot of parents will watch a movie before letting their child watch it if they're unsure of the suitability).

Honestly, content-wise, I think the new Spider-Man movie (Spider-Verse) which is rated PG is far scarier and graphic (no pun intended) than anything I've seen in many PEGI 12 games.

BlueJava · 13/01/2019 10:21

Why are you so sure the cake range is for age 6 and under?

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 13/01/2019 10:22

As many others have said, fortnite is a last man standing game and there is no graphic violence at all.

It's easy to believe everything you read. Do your own research before dismissing a game, it amazes me how many parents don't do this. I've played fortnite and pretty much the only way you know you have killed someone is a little flash and the number of players remaining reduces.
If you don't want to buy a fortnite cake, then don't but they're not inappropriate!

WhatNow40 · 13/01/2019 11:40

@BlueJava Why are you so sure the cake range is for age 6 and under?

I didn't say under 6. From 6...

I'll attach some pics, along with one of the many superhero ones they also do. I hope this doesn't put me!

I think it's the guns, grenades and weapons element I dislike most. I get the Spider-Man et al all have fight scenes and aggression in them, I just don't think a machine gun is a suitable cake topper for a 6 yr old.

Oh my goodness, I’m just dying at “splat horse” and it’s sequels ShockGrin It is both the best and the worst thing I’ve heard all day!

DS is 10 and he and most of his class play Fortnite. It wasn’t a decision taken lightly, but I’m pleased with it. I can think of 1 boy who has a gaming console but doesn’t play. Out of his last 4 birthdays he has had a Nerf party, a laser gun party and a low-impact paintball party (not sure what the other was, don’t think DS went that year). I assume it’s the online element which his parents are steering clear of as guns are clearly not a problem.

SockEatingMonster · 13/01/2019 17:36

*its sequels
