To get a sprinkler to stop dogs in my garden!

I'm sick to death of dog walkers letting their dogs pee and crap in our front garden by our tree! A neighbour has literally walked up with his dogs on a lead (we live next to an open space they could easily step to) and stopped whilst they relived themselves on my front lawn, where my two children play. I'm beyond annoyed now and need a solution.

Wibu to get a motion sensor sprinkler to cover the garden to put the dogs off? It's winter so I feel bad but they've not far to go to get home and I'm just sick of having to pick up after other people's dogs at my own home!

Following with interest, as we've just moved to a new house, with an open front garden, and we keep finding dog shit on our lawn. I'm thoroughly unimpressed.

I haven't managed to catch a dog owner in the act, so wondering about suitable ways to stop this from happening!

adaline · 12/01/2019 12:50

Some dogs might like it!

SaucyJack · 12/01/2019 12:52

YWNBU to want to stop dogs pissing on your private property, but I dunno if a sprinkler would work?

Lots of dogs would think you installing a water play feature was The Best Thing Ever. They’re not cats.

Can you get driveway gates instead?

chipsandpeas · 12/01/2019 12:52

my dog would love that

JacquesHammer · 12/01/2019 12:57

Is there no way you can enclose the garden? That would be more effective most likely.

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 12/01/2019 12:58

You can get those ultrasonic noise machines that are meant to deter pests, but I have no idea how effective they are. Has anyone tried them?

You can also get granules, to sprinkle around the area, that give off a strong scent that dogs/cats aren't meant to like, but again I have no idea if they actually work.

Based on where I live - lazy fuckers would still let dogs shit and piss along the boundary, which isn't much more pleasant really.

WorraLiberty · 12/01/2019 13:05

I've never met a dog who doesn't love a sprinkler, no matter what the weather.

CallMeRachel · 12/01/2019 13:08

Yabu

Do you realise that come mid July you are going to have the whole neighbourhoods children as well as dogs playing and pissing in your garden Grin

Put up a fence if you want to secure your boundaries. Personally, a bit of dog wee wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If it was being allowed to take a crap that's a different matter.

FreshlyWashed · 12/01/2019 13:10

My old dog was terrified of water Worra, so it would've worked on her. I do agree most dogs love them though.

Some kind of fence would work better. Or plant a hedge?

As a dog owner though, it is hard to stop them peeing in open gardens which are next to the pavements. No excuse for not picking up pooh.

Ellieisme · 12/01/2019 13:11

I was thinking it'd deter the owners maybe more than the dogs if they're getting soaked as they're all usually on lead when they're toileting Angry but maybe it is a bad idea, don't want a team of them playing on the grass dd on the other hand would love this

It's a new build and they're still building so I'm pretty sure we can't fence off the garden for a certain period.

I'm just sick of it, it's so rude! I'll have a look at what's been suggested, was going to sprinkle cinnamon but that's more for cats I think and I haven't actually seen any cats around here yet!

It's both Freshly

There is literally an open space next to our garden they can pee and poop in, it's separated from our garden by privits/shrubbery down the boundary.

Speak to the developer

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 12/01/2019 15:16

Dogs can (and should) be trained not to wee (or poor) while on the the lead, it's really not difficult to stop them if they're properly trained. Unfortunately not many people who own dogs seem to actually bother training them.

OP mine is a new development too and wondering if we can fence off the garden or not. Although I doubt that will stop dog shit piling up on the verge. People really are disgusting.

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 12/01/2019 15:16

poo not poor!!

Lazypuppy · 12/01/2019 15:23

My dog would love the sprinklers

Smallhorse · 12/01/2019 15:25

Good plan. Do it.

Aprilshowerswontbelong · 12/01/2019 15:26

Big sign.
Keep off the grass.
Trespassers will be shot.

OnlyaMan · 12/01/2019 16:04

I once researched the motion sensor sprinklers you are thinking of, on the Internet, to deter cats from my back garden. The manufacturers' videos look convincing-it is the sudden powerful burst of water that startles the racoons, cats, deer etc: It is not a gentle lawn spray a dog might want to play in.
What prevented me from buying one is the "booby -trap" effect it would have on anything that moves, larger than a bird. That would apply to the dogs, dog owners, visitors, postmen, and you yourself, if you forgot about it. Especially in a front garden.
They are made in the USA, and sell for £60-70 I think. I cannot find the URL, but it is out there on the Net.
