To re-use cot mattress

Justkeeprollingalong · 12/01/2019 11:47

I have kept the beautiful carved oak cot my mother bought us nearly 40 years ago. It was used by both my children and has been carefully stored with all the lovely bedding and mattress. AIBU to use the mattress for forthcoming first grandchild or should I try and get a new one?

I can't believe you're asking this!

Of course you must not use a mattress that is 40 years old.

SilverBirchTree · 12/01/2019 11:49

Get a new mattress. It's not safe to reuse mattresses for small babies, especially not old ones.

There is a lot of new information about SIDS now and baby mattresses now have to meet guidelines to be safe.

Anonalongadingdong123 · 12/01/2019 11:50

You'd definitely need a new one. No doubt about it.

WindyScales · 12/01/2019 11:51

Err yes buy a new mattress. Do not use a 40 year old used mattress for a new baby 🤦🏻‍♀️
Think of it this way, would YOU want to sleep on a 40 year old used mattress? I certainly wouldn’t

MardyMavis · 12/01/2019 11:55

I wouldn't, it's been stored it will be musty and have god knows what in it and 40 years is a long time!

WolfhoundsofLove · 12/01/2019 11:57

Is this a joke?

WolfhoundsofLove · 12/01/2019 11:57

Or a reverse?

cadburyegg · 12/01/2019 11:58

YABU. Surely this is a reverse?

Bambamber · 12/01/2019 11:59

Would you want to sleep on a musty, 40 year old mattress? I know I wouldn't. Never mind it's thought that reusing a mattress is thought to increase the risk of SIDS. You can get mattresses in lots of sizes, with any luck it wouldn't be difficult to find one that fits

GirlfriendInAKorma · 12/01/2019 12:01

100% buy a new mattress.

For my DD2 I managed to get one pretty much for 'free' using saved up Tesco clubcard vouchers (and it's a very nice one too).

All of the advice says but a new mattress to help prevent SIDS. Don't take the risk.

PurpleFlower1983 · 12/01/2019 12:01

You definitely need a new one!

covetingthepreciousthings · 12/01/2019 12:02

Why not see if you've got some 40 year old cot bumpers to go on as-well Hmm

Incase this isn't a reverse.. of course you should definitely get a new one, please look up the lullaby trust and read their guidelines for safe sleeping if in doubt.

53rdWay · 12/01/2019 12:02

New mattress for sure. £25 from Mothercare will get you a perfectly good one.

Orlande · 12/01/2019 12:03

I think they dropped the "buy a new mattress" advice a few years ago as there wasn't enough evidence for it to be a recommendation - so long as the mattress is clean, waterproof and in good condition then it's fine to reuse. All my babies used the same cot mattress.

I wouldn't reuse a 40 year old mattress though.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 12/01/2019 12:03

Have you discussed with your DD/DIL having the baby to stay?

If the cot is going to be used then yes you absolutely need a new mattress. But I wouldn’t assume that your grandchild will be staying without discussing that with their parents first.

bobstersmum · 12/01/2019 12:22

I'm trying to picture what a 40 year old mattress would look like..!

ToastyFingers · 12/01/2019 12:25

Chances are a 40 year old cot won't be safe to use either but you absolutely need a new mattress either way.

Owwlie · 12/01/2019 12:29

If this isn't a reverse then exactly this. Cot regulations have changed in 40 years. Check it even meets current safety regulations and whether your daughter/daughter-in-law wants a cot that old used.

Bertiebitch32 · 12/01/2019 12:45

Jeez stop being so tight. Get a new mattress! Yadbu

MsVestibule · 12/01/2019 12:50

Of course it's a reverse. The MIL/DM is insisting that her soon-to-be-born grandchild uses the 'family cot' but the mother-to-be doesn't want this to happen. Why not just post it from your POV?

Confusedbeetle · 12/01/2019 12:51

You do need a new mattress because it is so old and could harbour dust and spores etc, However I am so sick of the myth of the antimony in mattresses and SIDS. This was debunked 15 years ago. Its like Andrew Wakefield, once a scare is put out there it runs. I would happily reuse mattresses and do, but not one 40 years old. Be sure that the new one fits well and there are no gaps that could be dangerous. Also check the distance between the bars as regulations have changed. These are the danger areas. All of this should be discussed with the mother

melissasummerfield · 12/01/2019 12:53

Would you sleep on a mattess that had been in storage for 40 years Confused

MadeForThis · 12/01/2019 12:58

Reverse??

Tell the GP they can't reuse. Buy a replacement yourself.

SparklyMagpie · 12/01/2019 13:00

Nobody would be this bloody stupid, surely?

divadee · 12/01/2019 13:01

I know the theory of a new mattress has in some studies been debunked...... But I wouldn't want to take the risk at all. I would always get a new mattress for each baby.
