to be woken up every morning at 6am

To cut this short and sweet

Moved into area 3 years ago, just before 2nd DS was born. Nice quiet area, extended just to the point of uncomfortable. 4 bedroom terraced house semi-rural.

About 1 year ago, neighbour two door up at the end of the terrace, upgraded several cars from a mini-van to a 4x4 truck and a standard family saloon to a boy racer big exhaust.

The last nine months, said neighbour has taken work further away that now leaves him starting up either car at 6am if not earlier. Both cars are loud, the exhaust note for the boy racer car is not quite a sonic boom, but definitely a loud bass sound that other half and I can clearly hear at the back of the house.

Youngest DS, is woken up every morning, by either car. Regardless of “being quiet” from the neighbour. He’s been told about it, but ignoring it as people “being fussy”.

House is double glazed, rooms are decorated with names on and not going to change rooms around. But DP is up with DS2 from 6am every morning and this is now running into weekends, with neighbour working weekends now too.

Having seen other neighbours, we know its waking up about 10 plus of us in total.

Cars started up loud, but once woken up we can hear the boy racer car being driven away for a couple of miles at least.

ISBU to have to tailor my own lifestyle, around a neighbour, to be up at 6am with DS2 who’s “wired” after being woken up, he used to sleep in till 7am prior to this and hubby is taking most of this.

Before hubby looses his rag directly, can anyone suggest help

Can hear a car 3 miles away?? Hmm

My advice would be don't let this become an obsession. Asking round all the neighbours, convincing yourself you can hear a particular car in traffic 3 miles away etc.

6am isn't early, your DC is probably just an early riser anyway. I think that YABU and risking neighbour wars over something and nothing

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 11/01/2019 12:17

Both are ridiculous cars, being as we don’t live with farm dirt tracks or Silverstone nearby

I doubt the truck is for fun. Most people have a truck because they need it for work.

bamboolzled · 11/01/2019 12:19

he works behind a desk, truck is an extension of something !

we can hear the boy racer car from so far away as it makes that much noise, especially when driven by someone who think's they are schumacher but has the skills of mr bean

very heavy foot, revs the engine rightout through to about 4000 rpm and changes last second, so its really loud

White noise app might help muffle it a bit for DS2

fuzzyduck1 · 11/01/2019 12:25

Is he renting? If so complain to his landlord.

pissedonatrain · 11/01/2019 12:36

Not sure why you've been putting up with this for 9 months. Just record the db levels and make a complaint to council.

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2019 16:41

How can you possibly know how many miles away the car is, when you're still hearing it?

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2019 16:43

Presumably from the time it takes and the knowledge of the area Worra?

madmum5811 · 11/01/2019 16:46

Someone told me mods. to cars affected insurance.

OwlBeThere · 11/01/2019 16:58

I refuse to believe you can hear it from 3 miles away. Nope. That’s nonsense.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2019 17:02

I can hear a loud car like this (or motorbike) on the dual carriageway that's two and half miles away from my house so I can believe it!

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2019 17:06

BitOut yes fair point

PurpleAndTurquoise · 11/01/2019 17:22

I am woken up by motor bikes at 5am every weekend in the summer - they go out early as the roads are quieter. Road is a bit over 1 mile from our house.

Amaried · 11/01/2019 21:33

When these heavily modified cars pass me in the street, without fail I always think imagine the poor people who have live next to them. Honestly think that cars that produce that level of noise shouldn't be allowed.

RandomMess · 11/01/2019 21:51

@Amaried they probably aren't allowed had have been illegally modified!

RLOU30 · 11/01/2019 21:52

Don’t complain to his landlord like a PP said that’s just spiteful.

junebirthdaygirl · 11/01/2019 22:01

Could your dh go around and ring their door bell at 5am and say ..just letting you know how it feels being woken up every morning by your noise. Maybe neighbours could take turns!!
Know someone who did that to a neighbour whose dog barking was waking him very early every morning. It did improve things.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/01/2019 22:02

Must be annoying.

I sometimes leave for week at 3am and I'm so mindful of not waking anyone.

I close the front door as softly as I can, turn my car radio off and kinda roll off the drive and then slowly crawl up my cul de sac 😂

Same when I'm finishing work at 2am etc.

I'd hate to think I was disturbing anyone.

snitzelvoncrumb · 11/01/2019 22:03

I would try swapping rooms without moving furniture just to see if it's worth it, as the other child may wake it may be pointless. If it solves the problem then you have the simplest solution, because it may not be simple to solve otherwise. Try the other things suggested, it's worth trying. Have you spoken to the neighbour about the noise? If the modifications are illegal they may not want everyone complaining to the council.

My neighbour across the road has a modified engine and exhaust he leaves for work at 5am everyday and he wakes me up but not the children luckily so im not to bothered at the mo but when he does I'll start having a word with him , go and speak to him with the other neighbours to tell him it's an issue and it needs sorting it you'll take it further

Dollymixture22 · 11/01/2019 22:35

You neighbour is inconsiderate. I wake up at 6 and leave the house at 7:30. Even though my neighbours are inconsiderate with noise, I know they are still asleep at this time so I am considerate - no music, alarm clock just loud enough and no more, door gently closed.

He realises people are still in bed at that time and he enjoys waking them in his mid life crisis, embarrassing vehicles!

I don’t think he will listen to neighbours- see if you can do anything on noise pollution with the council
