To wonder why a baby might have blood round their nose?

I am just curious as to why a baby, no older than a year old, might have blood around their nose.

Could it be a medical condition?

I'm asking as I was in the supermarket yesterday and as I was walking through the isle, I saw a baby sat up in the pram with blood all around their nose. Some of it looked dried and some still bright red. The baby looked at me and just made a small whimpering noise.

I was very shocked and looked at who I assumed was the babies mother and she just glared at me. Maybe I had a shocked expression on my face, I don't know. But then I just walked away.

I felt a bit intimidated by the mother for some reason, so didn't want to mention her child was bleeding as if it was something medical I didn't want to come across rude.

Has anyone known of any medical condition from which a baby can have a bleeding nose?

I know she could have fallen or poked her nose etc but something just didn't seem right about it all.

Manual excavation, as our doctor described it! Seriously though, when when she was small our daughter used to have spontaneous nose-bleeds, often in a hire car, but she grew out of it.

I ask constantly signing accident forms at nursery.... ever since she could walk my dd seems to get some bruise or other.... nursery seem to expect it now and we celebrate if there is no form to sign.... she is going to be like her daddy unfortunatly

It's winter, which means most people have the heat on. The heat makes the air dry, which makes the mucus membranes in your nose dry, which makes you more susceptible to nose bleeds. It could be as simple as that.

I have lots of sinus issues, which make my nose irritated and sometimes it bleeds, and it gets very sore. I'm an adult, so I can deal with it, but a small child might not take too kindly to having her sore nose wiped.

Some babies and little kids get nosebleeds. It’s really quite common. One of my kids (aged 18 months) gets a nosebleed occasionally, normally when he’s got a cold. Sometimes he gets a cluster of them for a few days, then nothing for months.

It’s really not a big deal.

My son had a swollen face and dried blood round his nose when he was 6 months old. He had just had major surgery. The amount of dirty looks and accusations I got was shocking and the last thing we needed after a really difficult time.

Before having a baby I'd have wondered this too OP, but now I know how hard it is to wipe a child's nose when it is sore and I wouldn't think anything of it.
