To request another smear test..

I had a smear in July 2017, it came back as having ‘abnormal cells’. This bothered me as I have always had normal smear result. I went back 5 months later and asked for a repeat smear, but was told no, that they weren’t allowed to do another one as I had already had one recently. I said, Yes I have, but the results concern me, so I would like another one now it’s been a few months. Still they refused, the nurse actually said even if she performed a smear, they wouldn’t look at it as it was too soon. AIBU to ask for another one now - or should I wait the full 3 years ? And has anyone ever been refused and had one privately ? Wondering what the cost may be.

Go and talk to your GP before trying to book again and ask them to explain the result and the algorithm. The aim of any screening programme is to work in a standardised evidence based process and not to have all these ad hoc extra tests for people that just want them for personal reassurance. The costs of running a screening programme are immense - not just the nurse and their equipment, but through to transportation, hospital labs and staff, reporting, auditing etc. If they did all these ad hoc tests for reassurance, the programme would collapse. If you want it for own reasons you can probably go and pay a gynaecologist to do it privately. If they are following the national protocols then you can’t just demand its repeated. If you have new gynae symptoms before then, then they would do it.

Zimbabwe a GP too Grin - and PonkyPlink is right (if a little geographically challenged!), although the actual testing is done in your GP surgery the running of the screening programme is nothing to do with your GP or the nurse and if they try to send an early smear the lab will literally put it straight in the bin.
The guidelines are as DementedPixie posted. If you get any symptoms between now and your next test though then you must see your GP (who would usually examine you and refer to colposcopy if needed but still couldn’t send another smear).

I had severe abnormalities back in 2013 and had a LETZ procedure. They did a biopsy and said I was negative for HPV, which is what I though caused the abnormal cells?

So if there was no HPV then why did I have abnormal cells?
