Can you take a picture of the question? It’s easier that way

Passthepigs · 10/01/2019 16:18

Is this the question?

BritishLaylandii · 10/01/2019 16:20

x^3 (x+2)
OVER
3

nojellybabies · 10/01/2019 16:20

yes

OP posts:
BritishLaylandii · 10/01/2019 16:21

That's x cubed etc

nojellybabies · 10/01/2019 16:21

yes that is the question.

nojellybabies · 10/01/2019 16:21

British laylandii, could you please show your working?

marcopront · 10/01/2019 16:21

Difference of two squares.

saffinmum01 · 10/01/2019 16:21

4x(to the power of 8) / 3x-6

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsOn · 10/01/2019 16:22

Is this the answer?
(Not guaranteeing, because my maths is flaky)

www.symbolab.com will work it out and show you the working :-)

imip · 10/01/2019 16:23

"British laylandii, could you please show your working?"

But you won't learn, if I do.

TheSilveryPussycat · 10/01/2019 16:24

Just to check
Second term is 4(x3) not (4x)3 yes?
And is it (3x)-6) or 3(x-6) :the former I imagine?

imip · 10/01/2019 16:25

Here is my working

(I’m so going to fail - doing this at 47 was probably a bad idea).

x5-4x3 = x3(x2-4) = x^3(x+2)(x-2)
3x-6 = 3(x-2)

Divide top & bottom by (x-2)

left with
x^3(x+2) over 3

Margay · 10/01/2019 16:27

I did the same as WakeMeUp.

PurpleDaisies · 10/01/2019 16:27

The key thing is to recognise x^2 - 4 as the difference of two squares

PurpleDaisies · 10/01/2019 16:29

Hmm, thought I’d posted a photo of my working. Never mind.

One other question. Functions:

[gird your loins people]

f(x)=xsquared - 2
g(x)=x/(x+2)

what is gf(x) written in the form of b + a(x to-the-power-of-c) ?

OP posts:
GreenEggsHamandChips · 10/01/2019 16:29

Same as wake me up and BritishLaylandii

HotInWinter · 10/01/2019 16:30

imip you cant split the x^5 into x+x+x+x+x, its xxxxx

I agree with WakeMe (after a false start!)

GreenEggsHamandChips · 10/01/2019 16:32

I got 1-2x^(-2)

nojellybabies · 10/01/2019 16:32

thanks to all who showed their working Flowers.

DS had missed the point about " The key thing is to recognise x^2 - 4 as the difference of two squares"
