Getting new carpet fitted Saturday should I repaint hall/stairs tomorrow?

I know IABU to post here but wznted quick replies as all painting will need to be done tomorrow and I only just thought I should do it first. I last painted 2 years ago and the walls are quite marked due to small children. The carpet colour is light warm grey so if I did paint what colour should I choose. It is currently a light/medium grey I think it was pebble something by Dulux, I am now thinking grey walls and grey carpet might be a bit much. I like denim drift by Dulux but might be to dark? I think duck egg blue and dark duck egg also so wise mumsneters what should one do.

Duck egg blue is lovely! Do it! (And post a photo!)

We have 7m long hallways up and down stairs with nearly 10ft high cellings and plenty of light so might be able to take a darker colour.

Thank you GreenFingersWouldBeHandy do you think duck egg would go with a grey carpet?

Will you have time to do two coats before carpet needs fitting? I suppose paint does dry quite quick if you make an early start. It sounds lovely colour scheme.

If you dont get time you could put that plastic stuff over the carpet plus dust sheets.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 10/01/2019 15:51

Absolutely not. You need to leave paintwork at least two weeks to harden off before having carpet fitted. It tends to scuff skirting boards and walls when being brought in and when they bolster it in under the skirting boards.

OkToday · 10/01/2019 15:53

Yes I think I will have time to do 2 coats, by the time I have finished the first coat at the top of the landing the downstairs should be dry. I can crank the heating up for a bit if needs be, all dc are out tomorrow day time.

I did think about scuff marks but thought they would be easy to touch up as the paint will be fresh.

That denim drift is lovely, very close to F&B Stiffkey Blue.

I'd do it afterwards, that way you can do tester patches and see if it works with the grey. Also, with halls and stairways colours often look different as the light level tend to vary quite a bit. The colour we used looks much greener on the landing, where it gets direct sunlight, than on the stairs and in the hall, where it doesn't. If we'd used the other colour we were considering, it would have looked much too strong upstairs.

RaininSummer · 10/01/2019 15:58

No. It will get really chipped by the carpet people as paint will still be soft.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 10/01/2019 16:01

If there is any chance of it still being tacky don't do it, I know someone who had fluff stuck to the paint all over the place

Mrspotter12 · 10/01/2019 16:02

I did this once, the new carpet was thinner than the old one - had a lovely strip of old paint showing on the skirting boards ....

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 10/01/2019 20:05

You will be able to touch it up but where it will still be soft it will end up as more of a gouge and you will see the shape of it showing through.

madcatladyforever · 10/01/2019 20:06

Personally I wouild only do the skirting boards, the rest can wait. As long as you have dust sheets it will be fine.

SaucyJack · 10/01/2019 20:09

I think you’ve left it too late I’m afraid.

Dartilla · 10/01/2019 20:25

You've left it far too late to paint.

Invest in good dust sheets & paint after carpet is installed. Next time just paint well ahead of time for time to fully dry.

Anothermothersusername · 10/01/2019 20:30

A friend of mine had grey carpets and a light airy blue shade in her hallways. Looks lovely.

Zintox · 10/01/2019 20:39

I have mid grey carpet and warm grey walls and it looks lovely.

I agree with others it's too late to do woodwork now.

CottonSock · 10/01/2019 20:41

I ended up repainting after carpets fitted as it was a poor match. I would wait

HorseDoorBolted · 10/01/2019 20:44

Painted my walls a very similar colour on Monday. Had carpets fitted yesterday. All fine - very minor scuffs, I had a good fitter.

HorseDoorBolted · 10/01/2019 20:45

In fact did last coat night before!

Sallycinnamum · 10/01/2019 20:48

Have you bought the paint yet OP?

We have been converted to Dulux Diamond paint. It's expensive but they colour match it for you.

It's marvellous stuff. You can remove most marks on the walls with a damp.cloth or baby wipe.

tillytrotter1 · 10/01/2019 22:18

A bit late to start now! Even if you can get it done it won't be dry enough to have a carpet replaced on Saturday, the paint'll be sticky and you'll wind up with but of fluff in the paint! Can you postpone the carpet for a week and do the stairs?
