To think that the majority of newborn/babies crying could be due to this

An itch they can't scratch?

I've recently had newborn DD2 (this theory didn't develop when I had DD1)

When DD1 was getting up close to DD2 and her hair was touching her face i could see DD2 flinching.

When I get hair tickled on my face it itches, which I scratch, and therefore am relieved.

It's got me thinking that newborns can't scratch their itches and therefore would this be a cause for a large amount of discomfort!

This could relate to any itch on the body - not just hair tickling faces! Right now the back of my leg itches and I'm holding off itching it to see how DD2 feels

AIBU in this feeling ???

Or even just trying to attach the sensation of itching to the bit of the brain that understands “itch”.

(Though in my DD’s case most of the crying was because I’d forgotten to take the bit of cardboard out of her Sleepyhead before putting her down, so not sure I’m qualified to comment about such nuanced matters!)

When I say majority of crying, I mean, that isn't related to hunger/tiredness etc...

The cries you can't satisfy !

I've found myself on occasions giving DD2 an all over body scratch - lightly - to try and scratch her itches !

Hillarious about the sleepyhead , poor DD!

I remember having the same thought with DD1!! If their clothes are scratchy for any reason there's not much they can do about it, poor things!

Any 'unexplained' cry I always obsessively check fingers and toes, too, in case a bit of hair is wrapped round. Happened to me as a baby so I've always been paranoid about it!

Eyedrops, I've definitely done the checking fingers and toes !
