To come into work so Ill

creamcheeseandlox · 09/01/2019 10:26

My boss has just come in and sat next to me. I said hi and in his own words "morning, I feel like death"! He is full of cold and had tissues, nose spray and lemsip all over his desk and is coughing and spluttering. I have so far this winter managed to avoid colds but am thinking I'll probably bloody catch his one now.

I'm not a shirker in any sense but if someone is that Ill i think it's disrespectful to come into a open plan office and proceed to spread germs all over the place. AIBU?

What a prick if he could have worked from home he's obviously just being One of those work martyrs "ooh look at me coming in all ill I'm so amazing" sod off! I agree OP. He should be at home in this particular situation.

adaline · 09/01/2019 12:29

I'm in work today with a cold. I'm the manager in charge and if I took the day off the shop wouldn't open, or someone would have to come in on their day off and cover me.

But I would only go off sick with a cold if I had no voice or was suffering from serious sleep deprivation - otherwise I'd go in and at least try and manage.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 09/01/2019 12:30

Surely if you are too Ill for work you shouldn’t be WAH, or is this the new norm, all sick people soldiering on at home from their beds

GottenGottenGotten · 09/01/2019 12:30

If he isn't using tissues pointedly give them to him. If he leaves them on the desk make a point of telling him to put them down the toilet

Don't do this. Tissues are not designed to be flushable. They should be binned, not flushed.

Severide08 · 09/01/2019 12:37

If he could worked from home he should have .Failing that plenty tissue and handwashing.I do get fact that the workplace has to continue and people have bills to pay .But if you are really feeling dire with a cold then you shouldn't go in .Last time i picked up a cold off a person i ended up with a bad asthma attack so i try avoided people with heavy colds so i wouldn't been impressed if someone came into work and was blantantly really ill with a cold .

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 09/01/2019 12:38

No UhUh he's being a regular functioning adult

creamcheeseandlox · 09/01/2019 12:43

When I questioned why he came in and didn't work from home from the off his reply was "because I'm a warrior"! Hmm a bellend more like!

OP posts:
UhUhUhDennis · 09/01/2019 12:44

No he's not being a functioning adult. He didn't need to be in and in fact has an admin day today. So stay the fuck at home.

Poodloo · 09/01/2019 12:56

Fair enough if he can work from home then he should have stayed home. But honestly, it's impossible to stay off with every cold symptom..it's winter, colds are common in winter. It's not people being a martyr. Some people cope well with a cold. If you don't cope well with a cold then fine stay in, recover, but don't have a go at people who feel ok enough to work. I have bills to pay and need to work. I'm not going to not work for every sniffle, otherwise I'd lose my job.

gotten what on earth?! Of course you can flush tissues. It's wipes you can't flush!

UpAndDown89 · 09/01/2019 13:04

I go into work even if I’m sneezing, coughing, and have a mild fever. If I can get myself in, I’ll be in, no matter what. We can work from home but whenever someone stays home with a cold people comment “ffs it’s just a cold” and it generally looks bad to take too many days to work from home. Yes, I will likely infect others regardless of my precautions but this is the system we work in. I have to be selfish to protect my career and others do the same. Your boss is afraid of being seen as weak or taking the piss.

Triskaidekaphilia · 09/01/2019 13:10

Seeing as he could've worked from home, YANBU.
If that weren't an option then I'd expect people to come in with a cold.

Triskaidekaphilia · 09/01/2019 13:16

@Poodloo I've always been told tissues are not supposed to be flushed, as most take much longer to dissolve than toilet paper.

Shednik · 09/01/2019 13:17

There are colds and colds.

Coming to work with a runny nose and tickle throat - reasonable.

Coming to work with a high temperature, dizzy and coughing up green scum - unreasonable and inconsiderate.

GottenGottenGotten · 09/01/2019 13:35

You can't flush wipes, but you are also not supposed to flush tissues. Toilet roll has to deteriorate in a certain way, to make it flushable. Tissues aren't designed that way and are not supposed to be flushed.

Fatasfook · 09/01/2019 13:39

It’s only a cold. And colds are everywhere, on the bus, in the shops, at work, school etc. Impossible to avoid.

Omzlas · 09/01/2019 13:49

Wonder if he wore his dressing gown of doom or his hoodie of pestilence.......? Just me?

lynnepot · 09/01/2019 13:54

Common cold; = Meh
D&V = Irresponsible to spread it round the office

bringincrazyback · 09/01/2019 13:59

You shouldn't take time off just for a cold.

No, much better to go in and give it to everyone else. Not everyone has a robust immune system, you know.

Poodloo · 09/01/2019 14:03

Okay apologies gotten I was getting mixed up. I throw packet tissues in the bin usually. I was thinking you were classing loo roll too. I call loo roll tissue! Toilet tissue.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 09/01/2019 14:06

I'm on a zero hours contract. I go in regardless unless I physically can't. ( meaning I go in with colds etc).
I manage a lady who can never come in if she's been up all night with her toddler because she "feels like a zombie."
I have insomnia and often only get 3 hours a night (currently working with my GP about this , menopause related) but I always go in and cover her shifts as well as my own. I don't know what the answer is - some people are stronger than others?

SushiMonster · 09/01/2019 14:08

It does totally suck but you can’t be off work for 2 weeks every time you feel like you have a cold coming on

moanymoaner · 09/01/2019 14:12

Do people actually think this? I always thought it was frowned upon to be off sick unless you're practically dying!! I have been off sick and I'm considering going in tomorrow despite not feeling much better because I feel bad about being off when there is work to be done! I think I'll just stay home I'd hate to be accused of being a martyr when actually it's more than I care about the extra workload on my colleagues!

JudasPrudy · 09/01/2019 14:15

I have to go into work tomorrow with a cold. It's a new job and I don't want to get fired.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/01/2019 14:27

There are some jobs where it would be impossible to work with a really bad cold but an office job would not be one of them. Three nights with no sleep at all because of constant coughing (even with medication) followed by two disturbed nights, 3 days of not being able to eat any food the two days with a small bowl of oats on each day, 5 days of fever, not being able to walk as far as the bus stop, head spinning so I'm not recognising, for example, names of people I know well. Which office job do you think I can make a good contribution to?

WhentheDealGoesDown · 09/01/2019 14:30

MereDintofPandiculation

In that case you wouldn’t be able to work at home either
