Is AAT worthless for becoming an accountant?

I'm having a year out from my degree due to chronic stress and depression. I decided to take up a course (AAT) to keep my mind stimulated, and as I plan to study ACCA or ACA after finishing my degree, I thought I would do the AAT as its, y'know...Accounting.

I'm feeling regretful now as, the course is pretty straight forward (It's level 2), I won't be continuing with level 3 when I return to finish my degree.

I want to leave the course as I can't reply do anything with it. Am I right to give it up?

AAT is pretty basic. I wouldn’t expect you would find it challenging if you are degree educated.

You might want to consider if you really want to peruse accounting -during training managing workload and exams and other demands are tough on mental health. High levels of resilience and energy are required.

Would you recommend I discontinue Sushi?

I do want to become an accountant. It's just that presently, I'm not in tip top condition to perform well.

I’m not sure why you’d continue really. Its not a properly recognised accounting qualification so you might as well wait and do ACCA after your degree

There was a long thread on this in the last couple of months. Worth a search.

The upshot is that AAT is fairly basic and definitely respected as a bookkeeper, it’s not proper ‘accountacy’ Level though.

For the graduate ACA schemes they won’t much care if you have AAT level 2 to be honest although it may give you a couple of exemptions from the first set of exams.

Just reading a recent thread on AAT. Someone mentioned doing the ACCA foundation diploma. Another person said the AAT is not really looked at compared to ACCA.

Time to throw in the towel I think.

See what exemptions it gives you first.

Might still be worth it. Are you planning to work whilst gaining your accountancy qualification?

LuluMelons · 09/01/2019 09:30

From what I've read, ACCA only give exemptions if you've completed AAT Level 4.

So level 2 is pointless If I want to take the ACCA route

I went straight in at level 3 after a levels and did level 3 & 4 which gave me exemptions from 3 of the 14 ACCA exams.

I would spend this year on getting yourself well and having some talking therapy. When you’re feeling better I’d go straight to ACCA or CIMA.

I'm currently seeking work in admin or sales.

That is best. I haven't the mind to study at the moment.

Yup I’m your shoes I would stop the AAT course and focus on getting yourself as well as possible. You don’t need extra study at this point unless you’re enjoying it.
