To look for new jobs when about to start ttc?

I am 34 and DH is 40. We agreed to start ttc this year and I will be getting my copper coil removed in March. However, recent developments in my job have made it clear that there is no opportunity for progression, and I feel that I really need to start job hunting even if the timing is not great.

I think putting off job hunting to remain in a role which is going nowhere in terms of career advancement would be unwise, as it could take us years to conceive given our ages. However, I am slightly worried about the possibility of getting pregnant as soon as I start a new job, or even starting a new role already pregnant.

I would love to hear thoughts from anyone who has had to deal with a similar dilemma.

I don't have much insight. Other than we planned for ages when we would try. And were lucky to conceive first Month off the pill. A week after I found out I was pregnant I was made redundant. My work didn't know I was pregnant. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and started a new job yesterday. Not ideal but it is what it is. I haven't told work yet as I haven't seen my boss yet.

You can plan plan plan. Sometimes life takes you a different route.

Agree with PP that you should just go for it as sometimes you can do all the planning in the world then life takes you in a different direction.

However, I would also say do be prepared that you might actually get pregnant actually very easily. I know quite a few people who say they started trying thinking it would take them a few months to a year only to get pregnant pretty much straight away. It's very common, even at the grand old age of 34 WinkGrin

I started a new job when I was 6 months pregnant. Granted i wasn't in a career as such, just admin type jobs.Went for interview while pregnant, didn't tell them that I was pregnant then but when I got a call to offer me the job I told them then. Not that you have to tell employer straight away. If you start a new job pregnant or become pregnant when you start the job, they will deal with it so you shouldn't worry about it really.Worked out for me but as I said not a career job as such. Good luck with ttc.

Oh if course if you have maternity benefits with your current job that's something you have to think about too.

I stayed in a job I hated for 18 months because we were ttc#2. After so long trying we gave up for a while and I applied for a new job because I couldn’t take it anymore. What must have literally been around the same time as being offered the new job I got pregnant and started at 5 weeks. Didn’t tell them until 16 weeks but they’ve been fine about it.

After having issues conceiving I wouldn’t put anything on hold for TTC because you just never know which way it’s going to go. But whichever way it does, it usually all works out okay.

@Bluebirdyellow my current job pays additional maternity pay on top of SMP, which would mean that I would receive 50% of my salary for six months if I went on maternity leave while I was still employed by them.

I have done it- I started a new job and was pregnant within 6 weeks. I didn’t qualify for full maternity benefits due to tenure but took 5 months which still felt sufficient and protected my job. DH took the rest of my SMP in the shared scheme. He looks back extremely fondly on that special time. It worked well for us!
