To ask if anyone has ever honeymooned in Canada?

Thinking about having ours in Canada. It would be in August. DP would like to do Western Canada, looking at the weather though, it only looks to be about 21 degrees average that time of year. I guess that isn’t the end of the world but it would depend what we would be doing.

If you have, or just been to Canada on holiday, what did you do? Would you recommend it?

Alternatively, can anyone suggest a destination for more of an ‘active fun’ honeymoon rather than a laying by the beach Maldives style one? I love beach holidays don’t get me wrong, but they’re done to death in terms of honeymoon and I would worry that 10-14 days is a long time in somewhere like the Maldives, with not much else to do apart from lay on a beach (and therefore pretty boring if it’s crap weather!)

It's a fabulous place - we did the west coast in 2003 (basically bits of all the itineraries that have already been mentioned), and last sept we did Montreal, then through the Laurentians to Lake Saint Jean, and back down the fjord/St Lawrence river to Quebec. That was far less touristy as it's not a well trodden route, but it was a great trip. Montreal is my favourite Canadian city- really well worth a visit.

agnurse, I've planned to visit Whistler in two years, that is what my budget for saving allows. My Grandfather was from Blackfoot descent, so where you grew up interests me.

Could it be combined with Whistler, or am I best keeping them separate and plan to go twice?

How long would you say you needed around the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, area?

It's wonderful. Can recommend Vancouver Island

If you go then the West Coast is amazing - we spent 2 weeks in Vancouver (visiting family but it's a great city - cycling round the park, hike up Grouse Mountain we did parascending too.) There are great places to eat.

The ferry to Vancouver Island goes through the most beautiful straits.

Vancouver Island is stunning and Tofino at the North Tip is just amazing - it would be a wonderful place for a honeymoon in August. Whale watching, kayaking, hiking (cathedral of Trees)...

And great food....

Whistler is quite a significant distance from southern Alberta, a day's drive I think. You'd be best to take two separate trips.

For Waterton, it depends on what you really want to do. There are many hiking trails, some longer, some shorter. Bear's Hump you can do in a couple of hours, while other hikes are day hikes or even overnight or longer. You can rent a canoe and go across the border on Cameron Lake, or you can go on the boat to Goat Haunt, Montana (although if you aren't a Canadian or American citizen you have to stay on the boat). The townsite has many shops selling all sorts of things. I'd suggest two days for Waterton, longer if you want to do hikes and things. One activity Hubby and I always like to include is breakfast at the Prince of Wales hotel. This is a very scenic hotel that's right at the entrance to Waterton. Meals do tend to be expensive, so we always go just for breakfast. (We started this tradition because my parents vacationed in Waterton once, soon after they were married, and went for breakfast at the hotel.) The only thing is that the hotel isn't heated, so if you go during winter it's not open.

If you plan to go to Waterton, you may want to stay in Cardston rather than in the townsite itself. It will be a great deal cheaper.

Many good recommendations but Niagara Falls is the traditional honeymoon place : )

I spent alot of summers in Vancouver and absolubtely LOVED. There is so much to do, and that was just across Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

We spent 3 weeks in Toronto in 2009 and we loved it. It wasn't our honeymoon though.

We explored the city and then hired a car and had some good day trips including Niagra Falls - nice to see, take the boat ride out to the falls, but the town is tacky as hell! We also visited Niagra on the Lake - very quaint (if touristy) town - FAB icecream shop.

We visited a few wineries too

We loved Toronto Island - cycling around on the 4 wheel quad bikes, dd was only little!

I didn't honeymoon in Canada but went this past summer for a wedding. We spent 4 nights on Vancouver Island (which is fantastic) and 3 nights in Vancouver. Jet lag was bad but it was a fun trip.
