Are these just for girls?

Posting for traffic, but DH thinks these are just for girls...I think unisex. My theory was I sized up for DS and thought that if he takes his school jumper off then the full length sleeved ones would look too long...

Are these just for girls?
OP posts:
AlpacaLypse · 07/01/2019 22:37

At this time of year the shirts vanish under jumpers so I really wouldn't worry about it. And since buttons are done up using fingers rather than penises or vaginas it really doesn't matter if they're left hand or right.

Gth1234 · 07/01/2019 22:39

well boys and girls shirts normally the opposite way.

BackforGood · 07/01/2019 23:10

M3lon whereas most people would agree with you in theory, and I totally respect the right of any adult to choose what they want to wear, this is more a question where the OP is asking "will other pupils at school perceive that my ds is 'wearing girls' clothes' and therefore increase the risk of him having the piss ripped out of him, hugely?"
I suspect you know that and are just being obtuse, however.

OP. Yes, I agree with your dh, and most posters.

Obviously aimed at girls but wtf is the point of these not-fully-sleeved abominations? They're right up there with jumpers that have mock shirt necks and shit sewn in...fucking orrible. YABU to put any child in them!

strawberrie · 07/01/2019 23:20

I actually prefer 3/4 length sleeves as it avoids mucky and soggy cuffs! But agree this is definitely a style only really seen on girls and a therefore likely to stand out on a boy. Fine if he's particularly keen and chosen to wear them, but should be his choice.

Because they stop my wee one from coming home every day with impossible-to-remove whiteboard marker ground into her cuffs. Bliss.

HildaZelda · 07/01/2019 23:29

Yeah, they're girls but chances are your DS isn't going to be taking his jumper off at this time of the year unless there's an unseasonable heatwave.
For what it's worth I wore boys shirts in secondary school because my Aunt worked in a menswear shop and got them for next to nothing.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 07/01/2019 23:31

are they used in the vagina? No? Then I would imagine boys can use them too..

My bras and contraceptive pills aren't used in the vagina either, but I doubt boys or men would find them overly useful.

GruciusMalfoy · 07/01/2019 23:34

They are "for girls", and the buttons will be on the opposite side from what he's used to. DD wore a boy's blazer, passed down from her brother. DD's Asda shirts also tend to have a slimmer waist on them than the boys versions IIRC.

(Are my two the only kids who take their jumpers off regardless of season?! I wish they'd just keep them on, save on washing/ironing from being screwed up at the bottom of a school bag)

goldengummybear · 07/01/2019 23:37

Girls uniform is designed with frivolity and fashion in mind. Take the zips of pinafores- you can get plain, stars, flowers....The pinafores can be Lycra and stretchy or made from the Teflon stuff that boys trousers are usually made from. The 3/4 length shirt is all about trying to inject some "individuality/fashion" into the uniform. The manufacturers are trying to get parents to buy extra uniform (I'm assuming 3/4 sleeve is for when it's too cold for short sleeve or too warm for full sleeves?!) so that their girl can look different in uniform. (I'm know that's juxtaposition but hey)

My boys are in secondary and have to wear plain uniform but I'm surprised that boys uniform doesn't come with gimmicks that girls ones have. My boys would have liked a little dangly star or whatever on the belt loop or long sleeve polos during the winter.

Fuck me, we never had no fancy whiteboards when I went to school! Grin

Thetigerwhocameto · 07/01/2019 23:45

For those of you saying he may not take his jumper off at this time of year, I’d have to disagree! Having been into work on a training day today I can assure you it was a sauna! They usually minimally heat the school for training days so I dread to think what it will be like when the kiddos are back tomorrow.

I’d take them back and get short sleeved :) they do look pretty girly

potatoscone · 07/01/2019 23:48

I don't understand this. Why are you sizing up? Just buy the size he is, then the sleeves will be fine!

How2Help · 07/01/2019 23:59

Apparently gendered buttoning came about because ‘ladies’ (not women) were usually dressed by their maids whereas men and gentlemen would dress themselves. Not sure how true that is but

DH once explained this to me. Except it was not the dressing by the maids but the, ahem, undressing by the said gentleman. He was very insistent that no gentleman should be inconvenienced at such an unbuttoning moment.

Perhaps it depends on which etiquette book one has read Halo.

GreenTulips · 08/01/2019 00:04

Yes those pink and blue packaging gives it away - because that’s how we label kids isn’t it?

Lalliella · 08/01/2019 00:26

I hate 3/4 length sleeves. They make my wrists cold. They’re neither one thing nor another.

Returning2thesceneofthecrime · 08/01/2019 00:32

How2Help - LMAO at your explanation! Much prefer it to the one I was told! 😂😂😂

aNewMonica · 08/01/2019 07:22

Definitely for girls.

anniehm · 08/01/2019 07:41

They look like a female cut, never seen 3/4 length male shirts (not that it matters but I suspect it's darted for a close fiit)

FestiveGanesh · 08/01/2019 08:21

We need a MN campaign to stop this unnecessary gendering of school clothing. As many have said girls stuff (identified by pink packaging/accents) is more frivolous with frills/bows/flowers. However, it is often made of softer material, or is more stretchy.
Boys clothing tends to be harder-wearing and better at resisting stains.

I understand the original rationale for buttoning to an extent, but there must have been plenty of men who were dressed by servants/valets too. Besides which as the majority of people dress themselves dressed, we don't need different buttons by gender.

aNewMonica · 08/01/2019 08:33

@FestiveGanesh

Haha. Yes! We need a campaign to do away with 'gendered buttons'. They're just a small cog in the tyrannical patriarchy used to control us; the oppressed class. The gammons and right-wing press will never let buttons change though. The status quo suits them too much.

Girls are more flexible which is, I suspect, why clothes are stretchier. Boys have worse motor skills so fall over. That's probably why their clothes are harder wearing.

Boys tend to do activities (I'm sure you, you daughter are different blah blah ...) which could damage said clothes more.

missyB1 · 08/01/2019 08:39

I nearly bought those shirts for ds!! But luckily I took them out of the packet in Asda and noticed that they are shaped inwards like a fitted blouse. There’s no way he would have worn them, and they actually looked quite uncomfortable.

SavoyCabbage · 08/01/2019 08:54

I know that Asda girls polo shirts have a shape. I got some for my dd when we lived in Australia and they caused quite a stir at school. Crowds formed.

Orchidflower1 · 08/01/2019 08:59

What backforgood said hit the nail on the head.

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 08/01/2019 09:07

The only reason to return it would be that girls shirts are cut to be tighter so a 'boys' shirt might be more comfortable!
