I've just narrowly avoided being hit by a slice of bread

So, I'm all for caring for the animals but I've got a neighbour who keeps feeding the seagulls and it's driving me nuts.

My dd isn't keen on birds but freaks out at the crazy hoards or birds that descend when the neighbour chucks bits of bread out.

I've just let the dog out into our back garden and narrowly missed being hit by a rogue bread heel, obviously dropped by one of these blighters.

We've also just managed to get rid of a mouse problem and I'm not keen to have them return.

Can I call environmental health or AIBU?

I’d contact the council, yeah. I assume Environemntal Health would be the right department. Seagulls can be incredibly aggressive and don’t need further encouragement!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 07/01/2019 13:22

Maybe pop around for a chat about it before resorting to environmental health

PumpkinKitty82 · 07/01/2019 13:28

Yes you can call environmental health.
Have you spoken to your neighbour about it?
When I was younger my mum worked as a warden for a sheltered housing block so we lived onsite , so many of the residents used to chuck bread , chappatis , rice and tons of other stuff out for the birds.
Was a major health hazard!

Santaisfastasleepatlast · 07/01/2019 13:29

Sorry I laughed op.
At work on the loo!
Raise them a hefty crust back??

A couple years ago a seagull dropped something on the ground near our house when I was gossiping with a friend. It looked like mouldy, raw chicken but we couldn't tell. That was the luckiest day of my life because If it had landed on me I'd still be in the shower now.

Butchyrestingface · 07/01/2019 13:37

Are you sure that it's the seagulls he's trying to feed? (not that it makes any difference to your quandary!)

My bird loving father (one of his very few positive qualities) using to make nice mashes for the wee wrens and robins and what not in the winter when I was little. The mean gulls would swoop in and scare the little birds away and steal the food. He didn't intend it for the gulls.

I'm just trying to pre-empt what your neighbour might say in his defence if your confront...

cheesenpickles · 07/01/2019 13:42

I've not approached them yet but a friend knows them and said they are a bit odd. I'll give that a try first but the seagulls where we live are super aggressive and predatory, so definitely needs to stop.

Yes call them. An old neighbour used to chuck bread and rice out for the birds, rats came to live around instead. Letters were sent out to warn people about chucking random foodstuffs outside.

cheesenpickles · 07/01/2019 13:43

I think they're throwing it out generally for all the wildlife but I don't think the smaller ones get a look in at all. Plus for a built up area with mice and rats about throwing half a loaf of stale bread onto the road and pavement isn't ideal. There's a cars parked around and the bird poo literally eats away at the paint as well. Sob.

If they are weird but approachable, perhaps suggest some kind of bird feeder that's big enough only for wee beaks so the gulls can't get at it? They'll hopefully stop coming when they realise there's nowt there they can get at.

It sounds a pain, especially if the paintwork on cars is being damaged. [flowers[

WhoWants2Know · 07/01/2019 14:52

Lol, you might live near me. My neighbor feeds whole bits of bread and toast to the birds, which they then hurl at me.

bellabasset · 07/01/2019 15:21

You wouldn't be doing that where I live as gulls are a nuisance. They've come inland and dive bomb anyone daft enough to be outside with food. Their beaks are vicious.

Feeding gulls is banned here with notices up. I would contact Environmental Health to check. Say you are concerned about in infestation of rats

cheesenpickles · 07/01/2019 15:27

Just found a story on my local news site about someone getting punched in the face for feeding the seagulls. Not my neighbour but eeeek! Looks like people aren't keen at all.
