Car crash

Namechanged.

Yesterday I was involved in a minor car crash. Was at a junction, thought the lights were still green, turns out they had gone red and bumped into the car in front at very low speed. No damage to my car (bar the little plastic bumper just popping out) but his car was a bit smashed in, light box smashed, scratches and dents in one corner. Ok.
Drove round corner to exchange phone, name and Reg.

Both drove away from accident happy that he would go and get quotes tomorrow and let me know, as we didn't want to take it through insurance.

I checked his reg this eve on DVLA website and it is mot'd but only has a SORN. Can anyone advise if I should just take this through my insurance?? I haven't been driving long (2-3 years) so obviously don't want my premiums going up massively.

You can buy back a low value car from the insurers after it is written off and use the balance for repairs. Not a lot of people know that.

^Not anymore. Admiral and groups amongst others do not allow this.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 07/01/2019 19:45

but it does not effect insurance. If insurance was invalidated because you did something illegal,*
Absolute rubbish!

@stokieginge

Yes, there's a lot of bad advice on the internet. Thank's for highlighting something that is just plain wrong!

stokie that screenshot you posted is incorrect unfortunately.

Any news from " cash for crash" OP?

Kko1986 · 08/01/2019 14:32

Contact your insurance company he could tell you all sorts that needs fixing so it could end up costing thousands please go through the insurance route as you need that protection if your premiums go up they go up but it could costs you a lot more if you settle with him as he could try and get more from you.

Haven't heard anything at all. Managed to keep dozing off during a big meeting at work yesterday due to all the stress and angst over the crash fallout.

I would report it to the police anyway. They may have been driving illegally. Whatever the cost of your claim if it goes through your insurance, is usually how much the buggers put your insurance up by. So you pay outside an insurance claim or you allow the insurance company to take the same amount off you anyway when they bump up your premium.

I also had an accident in my first year of driving though also only minor. I have been 32 years accident free so don't listen to silly comments about you'll probably have another. That's totally presumptuous and wrong.

Don't give him money - what's to stop him taking your money then going through insurance? Also you have to declare all accidents anyway

When my kids passed their tests we typed out a list of what to do in a car crash including contact details and put it in their glove compartments. I haven’t got one to hand but it included things like take photos, draw a plan, what info to get off the other driver etc etc. We included a plain piece of paper and a pencil.

It’s easy to forget to do things if you have just had a bump.
