DS operation

Posting for traffic - hope people don't mind?

DS is 13 and due to go into hospital tomorrow for a circumcision (medical reasons).

I've got pain relief in and vasolene, which was recommended so his penis doesn't stick to his underpants. No sports or PE for at least 2 weeks.

Has anyone had a teenager go through this? Not sure what to expect or if there is anything I can do (other than pain relief) to help him and make sure he is comfortable.

He's petrified - bless him.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you x

Not sure how helpful this will be but my OH had this when he was young, also for medical reasons (he was right at the end of primary school when it was done so a bit younger than your son). Ive just asked him and he says it was fine for him - painful, but not awful, he says to avoid tight clothing for a bit as that was more painful. He doesn’t remember much about it which I know isn’t helpful for you in terms of tips to help your son, but he says that the reason he doesn’t remember the details really was because it wasn’t a big deal and besides some pain there was nothing worth remembering (he wasn’t bed bound, didn’t get an infection, wasn’t in agony etc). Hopefully it will be the same for your son and maybe it will reassure him to hear that some people have it and besides a bit of pain didn’t have any side effects/issues worth remembering? He definitely doesn’t look back at it with a shudder of “oh god that was awful”

My son was 7 so younger, but I can remember making him a cage out of a large box for in bed so that the duvet didn't touch it. Also with him being younger he didn't mind not wearing clothing on lower half.

Thanks Meredithgrey1.

I'll make sure he's got lots of jogging pants to wear.

Pudcat - didn't think about sleeping - luckily I still have some boxes that haven't gone to the top yet.

My DS may be 13, but he is still quite happy to wander round the house with no clothes on. I'll just shut the blinds, so the neighbours don't see.

Thank you

Not exactly the same but my 13 year old ds had to have emergency surgery for a testicular torsion last summer. He’s just said that being allowed to just stay in his room and not join in with anything really helped. Regular painkillers and a steady supply of pringles and Dr Pepper are apparently a necessity!
Hope it goes well and the recovery is quick.

At 18, it was almost painless other than when a dissolving stitch left early, it was completely fine no issues whatsoever, certainly didn't drop physical activity for 2 weeks. Pain relief and stopping the rubbing with Vaseline (other lubrication is available).

The only other thing is probably not something he wants to talk to his mum about, and it probably depends on his personal "technique" how much it will impact him both short term while it heals (which was very quick for me) and longer term, possibly make sure he has a chance of privacy to talk to the doctor without you around, but there's a good chance he won't anyway.
