To think a mid sleeper bed is a waste of money?

I have a tall 10yr who really wants a mid sleeper bed with a desk underneath... aibu to think she'll outgrow it within a couple of years? We currently have a kingsize bed in that room and I'm reluctant to swap it for a mid sleeper.... what do you think?

If she wants a bed desk combination, why not invest in a studybed?

Thewifipasswordis · 05/01/2019 21:41

Get a proper loft bed. Ikea do a double.

BendingSpoons · 05/01/2019 21:41

Seems a waste of money at 10. She is probably going to want a king size bed again in a few years. Can/Does she have a desk in the room?

Printerneedsink · 05/01/2019 21:44

Get a bed that's higher than a midsleeper. That'll give her lots more space. A child only needs s ingle bed.

Nikki1812 · 05/01/2019 21:46

It is and it isn't. I have a mid sleeper for my daughter but it comes with extension legs so it can be a mid sleeper or normal single bed. It's a Steens one and it is very sturdy, we've had it for 2 years now. I took it down from mid sleeper mode because I'm 5"1 and couldn't change the sheets or make the bed 🤣.

It seems likely that your dd thinks that her current bed takes up too much space as she wants a bed/desk combo that's usually used as a space saver. My ds chose to have a high bed rather than a double at a similar sort of age and had the same bed without complaint up to leaving home at 18. He is 6'2" and still has a single (no room for anything bigger in his flat). My dd chose the double and does complain about the single in her university dorm being too short. She is almost 6 foot but I think it's just what you get used to really.

Wigglywagglyworm · 05/01/2019 21:54

I didn’t bother and my daughter was 2.5 when she went into her single bed. It looked enormous with her in it! But yes I think sleepers are not needed.

celtiethree · 05/01/2019 22:00

I moved my oldest from a mid sleeper at 11. I’d only get one for a much younger child.

Fantata · 05/01/2019 22:06

As PP have said, it's a pain in the arse to change the sheets. I'd really avoid unless space is an issue.

Cantdecidewhere · 05/01/2019 22:14

Thanks, space isn't really an issue in her new room, but the kingsize bed is up against a wall and very awkward to change the sheets! A doubke or single would work better. She tends towards being a hoarder which doesn't help!

You need a high sleeper, not a mid sleeper.

OkOkWhatsNext · 05/01/2019 22:24

Don’t understand why it’s a waste? It’s a normal single bed size, my kids certainly won’t be getting doubles at any point as their rooms aren’t big enough, so will be in singles until they leave home. Is it that they’d grow out of having a high bed? Why? Just that higher beds are not cool
for older kids? I have mid sleepers for my 8 and 6 yos and was assuming that’d last them forever now...?!

GenerationSnowflake · 05/01/2019 22:31

Most kids have duvets, so you only need to change the fitted sheet in the bed, the duvet cover is the same regardless of the bed you chose. Not really an issue.

youngestisapsycho · 05/01/2019 22:34

My DD was fed up with hers by age 12, the climbing up and down. Friends kids were also the same.

Printerneedsink · 05/01/2019 22:50

Your DD could just climb up and change the bottom sheet herself.

DS 19 is still in a midsleeper and so is his friend. Nothkng childish about them, they just save space. You can store a lot underneath them.

Girlicorne · 05/01/2019 22:54

My DD has just turned 11 and is in a high sleeper, has been since she outgrew her toddler bed. She is asking for a double so yes I think it probably would be a waste of money at 10. Although my younger sister had a mid sleeper until she left home for university at 18. I guess it depends if you give her the option or keep her in it til she's 18!!
