To think I can’t do right for doing wrong with food

I’ve been feeling pretty pleased with myself for eating more veg over the last few months, in the form of things like spinach soups which I’ve frozen in batches, and veg chillies in an attempt to eat less meat. I’ve now just read that spinach and celery and other veggies that I’ve been using, aren’t safe to be reheated! AAGGHH why is this so hard?!

I always freeze and reheat chilli con carne with veg in, which veg aren't you supposed to reheat?

Doje · 05/01/2019 17:01

Eh? That's nonsense. They even sell frozen spinach, so how could you eat that without reheating?!!

ShortandSweet96 · 05/01/2019 17:02

Speaking of veggies and not re heating them. Have you tried raw cauliflower?! With hummus. Oh my god I think I love raw cauliflower more than chocolate!

Trying to super diet this year..

Apparently spinach, celery, beetroot and some other leafy veg produce too many nitrates when reheated that can cause cancer. Although who knows whether this is actually true. I’d never heard it until today but it comes up a lot when you google it

Everything causes cancer now. It's scaremongering. It's food, unless it can give you food poisoning then I'd just reheat it. The chances or it actually giving you cancer are probably very very slim. More likely to get it from the radiation of rocks outside.

Tootrousers · 05/01/2019 17:10

You’re probably right Short. It’s hard work trying to work out all the rights and wrongs of food.

I would agree that these days no matter what you are eating/drinking it will aparently cause cancer. You can't win Op so do what makes you happy.

Sunnysidegold · 05/01/2019 17:15

I think you should just continue as you are.

I have struggled in that past with being told to give my child more fibre rich food and dried fruit being suggested, when on the other hand I've been told not to give too much dries fruit because it's bad for teeth.

I think you just have to put it all into perspective and decide what's best for you. It is hard though!

BluePepper · 05/01/2019 17:17

I’ve always reheated veg, who doesn’t?

I’ve had anorexia nervosa in the past and still have ongoing issues trying to filter out which bits of advice to filter out. I’d ignore this one (and will), please don’t get too stressed about food. Eating more veg is great, don’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong.

BluePepper · 05/01/2019 17:18

Two filter outs made no sense, sorry! You know what I mean though hopefully.

On the other hand, there is this --

Seems to me you're doing fine, OP.

WendyCope · 05/01/2019 17:21

What rubbish Hmm

babysharkah · 05/01/2019 17:22

Where on earth did you read that?

Pachyderm1 · 05/01/2019 17:27

I’ve been reheating those things for decades, they’re totally fine.

What’s the actual risk here? It’s probably negligible and the benefit of having more veggies is probably negating any tiny risk anyway.

Angie169 · 05/01/2019 17:29

I would not worry about it , I would think ( only IMO ) they are saying that if you eat for example 5lb of spinach every day for a year it may increase your chances of cancer / heart problems / the dreaded lurgy etc.
A while a go there was a study that said drinking to much water may cause hyponatremia and may kill you because you loose all the natural salts that your body needs .
This may well be the case , I do not dispute that HOWEVER to drink so much for it to do you any harm you have to drink a litre of water every single hour that you are awake ( so about 11 hours ) for a prolonged period of weeks / months .

So it is unlikely that many of us will die of this !

VerbenaGirl · 05/01/2019 17:33

That’s bonkers! Where did you read that? I’m pretty sure it’s totally fine and the extra veg in your diet is doing you good.

I admit I do get stressed about my health the older I get. I never used to worry when I was younger. You are all right though, eating more veg is the important thing here.
