To ask you about temporary housing?

In the middle of a ridiculously complicated house move. I won't bore you with the details here but if you take a look on the sellers thread you'll see soon enough.

It's possible that I might needs temporary housing for around 6-8 weeks when we're between houses. There's me, DH and 2 primary school age DC. I literally can't think what we might be able to do!

Things I've thought of:

  • Staying with family, both live too far for school.
  • Staying with friends, loads have offered but I really feel it's unreasonable to put people out like that.
  • Renting, the minimum seems to be 6 months, we wouldn't need that long and it would cost loads to break the lease, money which we won't have.
  • Private renting, I've asked in the local FB Page, nobody seems to have any ideas/offers, no friends/family have anything we could rent
  • Staying in the local very cheap hotel, possible, but really undesirable for any length of time with us all staying in one room and eating out constantly

Can anybody think of anything else at all that I could do? I'm stumped, and panicking!

Get a flat via air BnB?

LIZS · 04/01/2019 21:25

Holiday accommodation, air bnb?

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 04/01/2019 21:25

Airbnb?

How many friends have offered? Could you not move around so you're not in one place for too long? My friend recently moved and stayed with a friend for a few weeks. It's not ideal, but if they've offered I'd say they mean it.

Could you explore local caravan parks?. As in static caravans? I lived in one a few years ago between house sales.

Failing this, an airbnb?

redcaryellowcar · 04/01/2019 21:27

A holiday let, especially out of season. Or rent a camper van and go on a brilliant adventure? (This one obviously means not being at school for a few weeks?)

Thehop · 04/01/2019 21:27

Static caravan? Anyone got a garden and a caravan you could camp in for a couple of months?

Cheap hotels (traveloge) and friends houses in between?

What area do you need? Maybe someone had holiday accommodations?

Cath2907 · 04/01/2019 21:30

Holiday let, we did that when our house was flooded.

MiniMum97 · 04/01/2019 21:30

Couple of weeks with each friend?

MidniteScribbler · 04/01/2019 21:32

I stayed in a holiday house for 2 months between houses once. It was during the off season anyway, and I negotiated a decent upfront rent (discount from their usual rates) so it was a good deal for them.

TokyoSushi · 04/01/2019 21:35

Thanks for the quick responses! We probably live in one of the most un holiday areas ever! (Warrington) Airbnb seems dingy, or pricey and not much in between! We might be nomads between houses!

If you can find an Airbnb that looks ok, contact the owner - they're usually priced for weekend let rates but some will be open to negotiate for a longer stay.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 04/01/2019 22:15

Camping? Canal boat hire?

TokyoSushi · 04/01/2019 22:17

Thanks! It could be in the next few weeks and I'm just concerned caravans etc would be freezing/deserted at this time of year so a bit unsafe? I'm not sure what I'm asking really, I'm not sure there is much of a solution!

Modern statics are quite homely (shit mattresses).

But we managed, it wasn't too cold. We did it for 9 months. Children were 9 & 12. They thought it was huge fun. Local to school.
