Nytol for teen

Debfronut · 04/01/2019 21:19

Would you give a 14year old Nytol? It says for over 18 but she is desperate to sleep. We have a no tech rule now after 7pm since a problem a few weeks ago, the warm bath etc routine but still not enough sleep. Can anyone advise me if one would be dangerous? Thank you

Can she try phenergan?

She should see GP.

curlykaren · 04/01/2019 21:59

Yes I would, full disclosure, my son asked for something to help him sleep on Christmas Eve so I gave him a quarter of a tablet. Worked a treat.

tor8181 · 04/01/2019 23:45

buy melatonin

CheekyNandosForMe · 04/01/2019 23:46

Melatonin might help but if you're in the UK, it's hard to get on prescription and can't be bought otc.

A reduced dose might be OK.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 04/01/2019 23:48

I took this is a child.to.get me back into a routine.

Id say yes, but go for the herbal one and half the dose. Then alternate nights until.she's weaned off so.she doesnt become reliant.

Hannnnnnnxo · 05/01/2019 00:36

To be honest the herbal Nytol doesn’t do anything for me - it just smells/tastes vile and I was wide awake. I don’t think it would harm her, but I don’t think it will do much either.

Could you try night nurse liquid (for ONE night - don’t take for over 3 nights) and book a gp appointment?

Or you can try and force her sleeping pattern to normalise. IE wake her up in the morning over the weekend and have busy and active days so she’s more inclined to sleep when she gets into bed.

Hannnnnnnxo · 05/01/2019 00:38

Sorry just wanted to be clear that I don’t think you should regularly give her anything (Nytol/night nurse) without advice from your gp as you don’t want her to become reliant on sleeping aids

I’ve just bought melatonin gummies. Cost me £15 for 180 gunmies. They are lovely too.
Suitable for over 12s. I ordered them from a company online, didn’t realise they were being shipped from the US but they’re good. Took about 10 days to arrive over Christmas.

Concernedmamab · 05/01/2019 02:19

For those saying see your GP - I was unable to get my GP to prescribe anything for DD's insomnia when she was 16! Had to go through CAMHS route with the enormous waiting list (and then they would only prescribe Prozac & Sertraline).

Hadjab · 05/01/2019 02:21

I use this melatonin spray - it’s brilliant

My son was prescribed phenergan by the hospital, a short course supposedly to reset his sleep cycle. I bought some from the chemists for absolute emergencies, he had previously been on melatonin long term due to his ASD but could still fight over the effects & not sleep. We have only used it a couple of times when he was dead on his feet & needed to get some sleep.

RedOrange21 · 05/01/2019 08:02

Try 5htp - you can get it from Barratts and such like. Works as well as Nytol (the proper one).for me without the groggy side effects.

potatoscone · 05/01/2019 08:12

It says for over 18

That's your answer then?

It's addictive. Don't start medicating a child with an addictive drug. See the GP!

potatoscone · 05/01/2019 08:14

I was only suggesting OP see a GP because medicating a child with an over 18 addictive drug is irresponsible at best. Whether the GP can help or not wasn't really my thought, it was more to make sure OP realises (from the GP) what a ridiculous idea this is.

Debfronut · 05/01/2019 08:48

Thank you for replies. I did not give it last night. I am desperate to help her but GP will refer to Camhs or hospital as a PP said and the longer this goes on the more it becomes a habit I think. She has messed up her bodyclock and needs to reset it. I will look at the other suggestions thank you.

Sorry I know this is an old post but this is the situation we are in, go won’t help, stuck in the CAMHS waiting list which as we’re in wales is longer. Impossible to get ds out of bed before 12. He’s 14 and hasn’t really had any school for the last 2 1/2 years! I’m not sure if he will willingly take a daily tablet and don’t like the look of the herbal. He nearly six foot so has the body mass of a lot of 16 year olds. I want to try giving him something sneakily 😬

Makingchocolatecake · 12/12/2024 08:32

I used to take night nurse occasionally at that age
