AIBU to ask for your suggestions. If you’re wre to spend a lot of time outdoors alone often in remote places, what would you take to protect yourself? Alarm perhaps? A spray, if it’s legal?

I wouldn't have thought you were particularly unsafe in a remote place? (I'm assuming somewhere rural) and if it was remote presumably an alarm wouldn't help? I would bring my phone and nothing else.

Amorea · 04/01/2019 19:11

I think it's unlikely to get attacked somewhere really remote, OP, if that's what you're worried about? An alarm wouldn't be very helpful in that situation, either. But a mobile phone for sure - and letting someone know where you'll be at what time is a good idea too, if you're off hiking.

Loopytiles · 04/01/2019 19:13

Is this for work, living somewhere, exercise?

What are you worried might happen? What is the evidence that the things you’re worried about may happen?

Waddsup12 · 04/01/2019 19:14

Who would hear the alarm?

GruciusMalfoy · 04/01/2019 19:15

I'd just keep a mobile on me, in case of accident. I walk the dog in my own, and it wouldn't occur to me to take anything.

Truckingonandon · 04/01/2019 19:15

A big dog.

How remote is remote?

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 04/01/2019 19:16

Upgrade to strava beacon? Sends a message to chosen contacts of your location every so many minutes. Tell people where you are going and roughly what time you will be back with a rough idea of stops along the way?

SexNotJenga · 04/01/2019 19:16

By and large I think I'd feel a lot safer somewhere remote than somewhere urban.

LittleBot178 · 04/01/2019 19:18

If you have an iPhone you can press the power button quickly 5 times, it sets of an alarm and automatically calls 999 as well as texting your location to everyone in your favourites list.

In terms of self defense I think you can get sprays that are legal in the UK (if you are here) but apparently they’re not that effective. A travel sized hairspray would probably do.

Define remote.

I have had jobs working on my own for hours in the woods. Last night I went for a run in countryside at dusk (rewarded with barn owl company!!).

I sometimes put on my best resting bitch face & promise self to kick shit out of anyone who goes for me.
