To consider a £9.50 Sun holiday?

Passthepigs · 04/01/2019 18:31

On maternity leave from March so on a tight budget and will have new baby plus a 2.5 year old.

I’ve never read The Sun and don’t like large caravan parks with lots of other other families. Am I crazy to consider it as a cheap something to do for a few days next year or will I hate it?

From the threads I’ve seen on here I reckon the are horrific. But up to you 🤷🏽‍♀️

audweb · 04/01/2019 18:34

I did one last year and it was fine. Nice caravan, ok park, good location for exploring the area, was a lovely cheap holiday. Plan to do one again this year.

HugeAckmansWife · 04/01/2019 18:35

My parents have done them frequently. So long as you are not expecting anything beyond basic they are fine.

Whatififall · 04/01/2019 18:37

I did 2 in 2017. First one was actually really good so I looked into going back in the summer and it would have been £300 to book direct so I waited until the next round of Sun holidays and booked it for £70.

It was fab for kids and our caravan was nice both times.

Smoothyloopy · 04/01/2019 18:37

We've done several & they've always been fine.

GhostSauce · 04/01/2019 18:38

I don't know if things have improved in the last 20 years, but my parents used to take me on them, and they were pretty grim. Think derelict chalets, prison camp style holiday parks etc.

A few memories include seeing one man glass another man in the face in the bar at pontins around 1994, being moved around 3 different chalets to find a non-mouldy one, sleeping in a caravan on the Norfolk coast in the late 90's during bad rain with water pouring through the roof.

Maybe we were unlucky but I'd sooner stay home and watch Netflix than go on another one of those.

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 04/01/2019 18:39

We've done quite a few and they've always been perfectly fine.

Witchofzog · 04/01/2019 18:39

I did it twice. Once in Scotland and once in North York's. I expected it to be awful but the Scotland holiday in particular was just lovely. We had a caravan which was clean, a wonderful sea view and we used it as a base to visit some beautiful places. If you can choose week days and a quieter site. Do some research first and it will be fine Smile

BarbarianMum · 04/01/2019 18:39

A friend of mine is on a tight budget and does one every year. They have a good time and its certainly better than the alternative ie nothing.

Bombardier25966 · 04/01/2019 18:40

My elderly neighbour does them and they have a great time. They always seem to get upgraded caravans free too!

Horses for course. We went two years ago with bil and sil. Near lovely beach, nice walks, lovely countryside. Used the club once to watch the footy. Been with DC in the past, sparingly used club, but used playgrounds, pools - they had a blast. If you're in the north, id recommend the park at St Mary's lighthouse. The beach is fab.

Gizlotsmum · 04/01/2019 18:41

I think you may struggle as they tend to be on large caravan parks but you might be able to go in term tome so will be less busy.. however it sounds very much not your thing which will make it harder to enjoy

weaselwords · 04/01/2019 18:41

I’ve done loads. Mainly north Cornwall. We used them as a base for exploring and found the caravans great but avoided the entertainment. For £9.50, you can’t go wrong really.

almightygirl · 04/01/2019 18:42

We’ve done them four times. Had a bad, okay& good experience! The good one we did twice. The key is to choose somewhere that’s got access to a beach or other things to do outside the park, so you’re not stuck there. Also make sure there’s some indoor things to do in case it rains.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/01/2019 18:43

Do it! Just be flexible on times and fussy on sites. We stayed at devon cliffs - a haven site in exmouth. Its a huge site and definitely not what we wouldchoose these days as we like actual camping but we rebooked a full price stay the following year. It was great and im probably a bit of a snob.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 04/01/2019 18:43

I am thinking about doing this, when do the codes start? Thank you Smile

gamerwidow · 04/01/2019 18:44

If you don’t like large caravan parks then stick to Park holidays resorts which tend to be quieter without the holiday camp style entertainment.
We’ve done about 6 at a mixture of Haven and Park resorts. They’re not a holiday I would ever choose if I didn’t have kids but DD absolutely loves them especially the Haven sites which have great kids entertainers. One year we splashed out on a luxury cottage hire instead and she was most put out we weren’t going to be in a caravan because it’s not a proper holiday otherwise.
Never stay in the basic or standard package though the upgrade is definitely worth it.

Slippershoes · 04/01/2019 18:45

Going on first one in March. I think DD 3.5 will love it and I really like sleeping in caravans Grin

gamerwidow · 04/01/2019 18:46

Ps under no circumstances whatsoever should you go to Pontins at Camber Sands!!

LEMtheoriginal · 04/01/2019 18:46

We stayed in the basic caravan in haven and it was actually lovely. Park resorts not so much!

Vgbeat · 04/01/2019 18:47

We've done a couple when my dd was smaller. To be honest I was expecting it to be awful and was expecting it to be like ShamelessGrin but they have been great and we've been to Haven since a few times direct as my dd loves going and she's in her element.

Duffy888 · 04/01/2019 18:48

We go on one every year in addition to our main holiday. 90% of them have been great. Read reviews of parks on trip advisor and avoid Pontins! We use them as a base for exploring the local area and don’t use the park facilities much although we did when kids were younger. We enjoy the bargain break and can take our dogs to selected parks.

KittyClaus · 04/01/2019 18:48

I did one with a friend who had just broken up with her DP, before I had kids. We took a couple of boxes of wine and some board games and spent a lot of time exploring the local area. We also ‘upgraded’ the princely sum of £45 for the week.

It was totally fine and we had a laugh. I keep suggesting to to DH because the DC are obsessed with the idea of camping - I know DH would rather boil his own head but I feel like a caravan holiday is a good compromise!

ChairmanMiaow123 · 04/01/2019 18:51

The Sun are absolute scumbags of the highest order, though, Pass, I wouldn’t want to be lining Rupert Murdoch’s pockets, either.

Don’t forget that this is a newspaper that thought it was ok to hack a dead teenager’s phone...

That so-called newspaper shouldn’t be encouraged, frankly.
