To think my son has a pasta allergy???

Rewind 6 months and we were having trips back and forth to GP as my son had been having regular nights/mornings where he was violently vomiting. It started when he was about 1. The only thing I could link it to was it was the nights we had pasta on. I brought this up with the GP and he said it couldn't be correct as that would be a gluten problem, which would mean he wouldn't cope well with bread etc.
Nonetheless, I cut pasta out on the off chance it was that and it didn't happen. Without thinking today, I let him have 5/6 spoonfuls of pasta, and here we go at 5am with him throwing up everywhere.
Is it possible to have just a pasta allergy? Blush

Is it egg pasta? Is it dry or fresh? What sauce do you use? Do you use the same sauce each time?

iturt · 04/01/2019 05:03

@Weenurse I'm going to check on the egg pasta thing tomorrow. It's usually dry pasta, today it was a ready made, lunchtime pasta pot. The sauce varies, have used plain chopped tomatoes, plain pasta sauce, mascarpone.

I was about to say, does he tolerate eggs?

iturt · 04/01/2019 05:07

@MyDisposableUsername he eats cakes and stuff that have eggs in and never has a problem. He's never liked eggs themselves so couldn't really tell on that front!

OP posts:
iturt · 04/01/2019 05:09

@MyDisposableUsername he's also fine with mayonnaise, breaded food, ice creams and stuff like that (after a quick search for food high in egg content as my mind is blanking at this time!). It's always just pasta that he has an issue with.

If it is different sauce each time, we can eliminate that and just look at the pasta ingredients. Some are allergic to the preservative in some tinned pasta.

Poor kid

iturt · 04/01/2019 05:13

He also throws it up pretty much almost whole still and it's always been 12-24 hours later. It's like it doesn't even start digesting.

How bizarre! Sorry, I've exhausted my single theory Grin

iturt · 04/01/2019 05:14

@MyDisposableUsername don't worry, that's how I feel! It's easy enough to just cut it out for good for him but I'd like to know why it's specifically just pasta and why exactly it's not agreeing with him, whether it's an allergy or an intolerance or just doesn't sit right!

Try making your own and see how he reacts. It maybe the added extras.
Good luck

Mamaryllis · 04/01/2019 05:27

Tell him to chew it. That might help...

iturt · 04/01/2019 07:13

@Mamaryllis don't think that's great advice, is it? I clearly meant 'pretty much whole' as in whole after what he's chewed and he's 1.

MiddleClassProblem · 04/01/2019 07:17

Have you tried smaller pasta shapes?

iturt · 04/01/2019 07:17

@MiddleClassProblem if we have pasta from a pack I'll buy the smaller baby ones for him to have.

My DS used to randomly vomit and the GP put it down to over excitement Confused
He's stopped now he's in Secondary School although he was quite happy in Primary School.

Obvs in your case stop giving him pasta. Try rice instead.

MiddleClassProblem · 04/01/2019 07:18

Also he can’t be chewing it if it’s coming up whole. What kind is it?

DrDreReturns · 04/01/2019 07:19

Is he ok with bread? Could it be a gluten thing?

MiddleClassProblem · 04/01/2019 07:19

Sorry I don’t know what you mean by baby pasta. Is it different to normal pasta? If so why not just use normal pasta?

Weenurse · 04/01/2019 07:20

I like the rice idea, less hassle than making pasta from scratch. Although the DC might find it fun

iturt · 04/01/2019 07:21

@MiddleClassProblem it's the same as normal pasta except small shapes, animals and stuff! It's not coming our 'whole' but whole enough to see it still and it's not been digested much past chewing.

OP posts:
iturt · 04/01/2019 07:21

@DrDreReturns he's fine with bread when he has it. I also thought gluten when it started a while ago!

OP posts:
iturt · 04/01/2019 07:22

He's slept for the past 2 hours and has now woke and has vomited everywhere again. He won't drink water/eat anything but he's happy in himself still.

OP posts:
MiddleClassProblem · 04/01/2019 07:24

I would try him on regular pasta just to see. It could be an additive that’s disagreeing or the texture.

Weenurse · 04/01/2019 07:31

I think the poor kid has vomited enough. Switch to rice and try again in a few months.

CleverWittyUsername · 04/01/2019 07:36

In your sauce examples it seemed quite tomatoey - could it be that triggering the sickness, rather than pasta? My little boy used to be very sick from tomato based baby food, then after weaning always got a horrible rash from cheap/unbranded pasta sauces and McD ketchup. Not from fresh tomatoes or branded ketchups though, so it took us a while to figure out.
