AIBU to ask what Birthday / Christmas / Easter money is??

I've never had this or given it, unless it was instead of a present to buy something with, for older children.

Yet I'm regularly reading on here and elsewhere about children getting money on these occasions which seems to be for all ages of children or in addition to presents, with lots of people putting their children's money into bank accounts etc

What is this money and where is it from?! My DC and their cousins typically get toys, board games or puzzles from their wealthier GPs. Why do they get it for Easter? Mine get a chocolate egg?!

Some relatives give cash instead of presents. It’s simple.

Bringbackthestripes · 03/01/2019 19:49

Yep. DC has had Christmas money off several relatives instead of birthday/Christmas presents and sometimes gets money instead of eggs at Easter.

SoyDora · 03/01/2019 19:50

As above. Some people give cash instead of gifts. Mine are 5 and 3 and some relatives have given cash for Christmas/birthdays since they were born. This Christmas they spent it in Build a Bear but previously its just been put in their bank accounts as they didn’t need anything.
My grandma gives them £10 at Easter ‘instead of chocolate’.

CreativeMumma · 03/01/2019 19:51

For us it's usually instead of a pressie or you might get a token gift and some cash. Have never had it a Easter, its chocolate or a book in our house.

Nnnnnineteen · 03/01/2019 20:04

I am a spectacularly slack god parent. I give money for all such occasions.

Dd (8) tends to get a mixture of presents and money from friends for her birthday and if relatives are a bit stumped as to what to buy they will also just put money in a card. Easter, yes she often gets money or clothes from relatives instead of ending up with masses of chocolate. So yes she gets a fair bit of easter / birthday / Christmas money

Parttimewasteoftime · 03/01/2019 20:20

We have a huge family one year my DS'S got 14 Easter eggs each! It's fine we were still eating them in summer but yes now I say (if asked) to family esp that live away just put a couple of quid in a card then they can buy a comic etc.
My Nan is disabled and only gives money due to mobility issues she still likes to treat them I know we are very lucky.

Birdsgottafly · 03/01/2019 20:23

If someone has a large, or generous Family, then the child might not want many presents. In the case of Toddlers, what they want doesn't necessarily cost much. So cash is given to make up for the lack of money spent.

It just means that spending can be spread out throughout the year.

What is done with it depends on the financial situation of the Parent(s).

So it could be used for anything from the child's bedroom being done, to put towards a present outside of the Parents affordability, days out, or just savings.

Easter is a big celebration, if your Catholic. It's as big as Christmas. Because our children had Winter Birthdays, we'd give Bikes etc.

Chocolate isn't a treat anymore and £5 makes more sense, as does not buying things for the sake of it.

Usually olderish children start to get money when they are a bit old for toys, they can then choose something themselves from the money.

AliTheMinx · 03/01/2019 20:27

My son usually receives money at Christmas, Easter and for his birthday from older relatives/family friends, and I pay it straight into his bank account. He has far too many toys anyway, so it's nice to put something towards his future :-) He is very lucky.

mindutopia · 03/01/2019 20:31

Mine tend to get money from my family and from great grandparents instead of presents. My family lives abroad and sending presents is expensive. Older relatives tend to also give money in a card. Lord knows we have enough plastic tat! This is for birthdays and Christmas. Easter they get chocolate, if anything. It all goes to savings straight away as they have plenty of toys and don’t need to buy any more.

Jammysod · 03/01/2019 20:32

My nan gives my son money instead of presents, we put it away in savings for him. He gets loads of toys from other family members so he doesn't need more. She likes that he has money put away for when he's older & needs it

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 03/01/2019 21:00

Surely you know what birthday and easter money is? This is just a tad goady. Why not just say you don't agree

pantyclaws · 03/01/2019 22:51

It's not that I don't agree Tw1nset, but I'm starting to wonder where the hell my DC's money is!

In seriousness I've genuinely never heard of Easter money and didn't know it was A Thing.

They've never had any birthday / Christmas / Easter money in their collective nine years on the planet, except when my DM couldn't get DC1 the present she wanted to get him in time so gave him money (something like £20), which was to buy a toy along the same lines, so didn't get saved. Only close family (GPs and aunts/ uncles, five givers in total) give presents really.

I'd love them to get cash rather than presents they don't want or need tbh, but it seems awfully rude to ask for that. After Christmas we have quite a few things that will just go straight to the charity shop or present drawer.

Ours get money off some relatives and friends. I put it in their bank but in the bank that I allow them to spend from. I personally don’t like them having to save their birthday present money until they’re 18. It annoys me if people giving the money give it with a condition.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 03/01/2019 23:05

Mine don't get Easter, birthday or Christmas money. I don't think I know anybody who gives their kids easter money

Bertiebitch32 · 03/01/2019 23:39

Me and my ds both agree our kids get far too much chocolate at Easter so we exchange money instead of Easter eggs. I.e a £5 per child .I'm actually fed up of throwing out of date Easter eggs that have bloomed .
