To HATE the word 'Mama'?!

Just a lighthearted whinge really.
Why is the word mama suddenly everywhere?! I'm 24 weeks and feel like every other day someone says something like 'Are you excited to be a mama?' Or I see t shirts etc with 'mama' on. One of the midwives even uses it!

Makes me cringe beyond belief.

Tuff my dc call me mamma and I love it Grin

Choccywoccyhooha · 03/01/2019 01:33

Two of my children call me mama. I'm not sure why or how it started, but they do. The other calls me mummy. It's hardly offensive is it?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/01/2019 03:59

Made the Spice Girls a fair few bob, though.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 03/01/2019 04:37

I've always referred to my mom as mama, however, she is a Latina, so it is the norm. Incidentally, I was only allowed to watchThe Disney Channel, The Wildlife Channel, Nova, MTV, PBS, and BBC when I was growing up. I remember the first time I heard an adult call a mother "mummy" and I was Confused

Nonomore3 · 03/01/2019 04:58

Lots of countries use mama, and I notice that some words people tend to keep using even if they move to an English speaking country and use English most of the time.
The word for mum and dad, and generally the nickname for female and male genitals being two such examples.

My friends from Spain all use mamá.
I like it much better than the harsher sounding ‘mum’

MitziK · 03/01/2019 05:14

Think of the difference in tone when said in haste -

MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM!
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!
MUMMY!
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

It's impossible to bellow Mama in the same way. Which is quite nice, IMO.

Ilnome · 03/01/2019 05:44

I am an adult and I and every adult on my ma’s side calls their mum mama - because we’re italian though lool and mum don’t flow as well

SummersB · 03/01/2019 05:52

I Lol‘d at vegan sounding! So true! Agree that *Mushforbrains“ hit the nail on the head too when saying it’s often those with “gentle”parenting that use is - I have two friends who use the wet blanket approach to parenting who refer to themselves as “mama”, or occasionally “mama bear” - vom!

SummersB · 03/01/2019 06:04

Oh, and I think it’s fairly obvious that the OP doesn’t refer to families who are from countries where “Mama” is the norm - I call my own mother “Mama” because I’m born and bred in Germany.

AC14255 · 03/01/2019 06:10

I've always called my mum mama. I accidentally called her mum once in a parking lot when I was very young and remember it feeling so weird to address her like that way that I never did it again. Haha. Of course, I'd be alright with my kids calling me by my real name, too, but I know people think that's awfully strange.

FruitCider · 03/01/2019 06:12

You wait until your LO looks at you with love in their eyes, says "I love you mama" and plants a big sloppy kiss on you 😍 trust me, you won't mind it then! X

borntobequiet · 03/01/2019 06:13

My mid-30s DD has called me Mama ever since she could call me anything, though in public sometimes uses my given name when speaking to me or of me with other people. My son calls me Mum.

planespotting · 03/01/2019 06:16

We use mamá and papá. Someone said something like "Papá, how posh"
Confused
Nope, just Spanish Grin

puzzledlady · 03/01/2019 06:19

what?! its just another word for mum, mother, mummy. You need to look for real problems. Hmm

ballroompink · 03/01/2019 06:22

I always associate 'Mama' with 'crunchy', gentle parenting types as well.

I find 'Mumma' and 'Mama Bear/Mumma Bear' so cringey though.

MarshaBradyo · 03/01/2019 06:25

I don’t mind the cultural / regional variety

But the IG variety is so nauseatingly twee and probably said by people whose dc say muuuum (not posing for this revolting free shake again stop creeping up on me and taking pics)

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 03/01/2019 06:25

@planespotting, HIGH FIVE!!!!!!! LOLO!!! Grin

hiddeneverythin · 03/01/2019 06:27

I'm with you

planespotting · 03/01/2019 06:33

@MissLanesAmericanCousin 😅

Teachtolive · 03/01/2019 06:34

Drives me nuts! I have no problem with kids calling their mother mama but all this shite of "hey mamas, you're doing great" and "i am one proud mama" etc kills me. It just sounds so saccharine.

Santasshoe · 03/01/2019 06:35

My youngest calls me it and it really greats on me. Not that I would tell him off for it though I just find it a bit odd.

Katedotness1963 · 03/01/2019 06:35

My eldest calls me mum, the youngest calls me mumma. No idea where he got it from, but he started school in an international school, maybe it was common amongst the other children.

Bigonesmallone3 · 03/01/2019 06:49

Ds9 always called me mummy (still does) dd1 calls me mama and I like it..

JudasPrudy · 03/01/2019 06:49

It just screams you might be a boring old mum who feeds your children fish fingers and puts CBeebies on for them but I'm a mama who makes her children vegan organic kale oaty pops, doesn't cut their hair until they're a teenager because they can't consent and takes them to enriching activities at forest school from 3 months old.

And then, despite our differences, I'll post patronising quotes about how you've got this mama like some kind of parenting authority.

coffeeagogo · 03/01/2019 06:51

Both my 2 call me mamma - no idea why as I always called myself mummy - as in bring it to mummy, ow don't hit mummy with the car.

I remember it fondly as my 9 year old is super hormonal and all I get now is you are not my mummy, I can't be related to you Grin sigh...
