R3b3kah · 02/01/2019 22:36

Another year and another promise to myself I will lose weight and tone up

Roughly around 2st to lose and try get a little fitter since baby number 4 who was born by c section 12 (almost 13 months ago) who is still breastfed

Cant go to the gym, little one won’t stay with anyone except me and his dad. He works 5 days a week office hours and i go straight to work when he’s home, not home till 8pm ish and after looking after the home and running after baby all day I’m too knackered to go gym at near on 9pm.

Soooooo I have asked DP to get me some weights, no idea what weights and size to get.

I’m hoping someone who does fitness has some ideas for me Smile

Main areas I’d like are bum, legs and stomach (infect everywhere Grin )

I'm absolutely no help, but I'd like to see the replies to this so essentially bumping!

Exercise dvds at home. I started on maternity (baby in bouncy chair near me) and still do them now 6 years on.

Birdsgottafly · 02/01/2019 23:01

Get a general set from Argos, if that's easy for you.

Lift the heaviest weight you can for five minutes.

Forget lots of reps and low weights. The newist sports science shows that less time and more weight is better.

You'll love getting stronger.

I got a kettlebell that could be three different weights and threw a kettle routine in as well.

That with walking, is all you need.

Go to Aldi tomorrow and get some 2kg and 3kg weights. It's Aldi Thursday's special gym sale stuff starting tomorrow.

I've a book called Smart Girls do Dumbbells and it's really good. Started me off perfectly, I'm now using 4kg and 6kg weights and working my way up.

Check YouTube for beginner's routines. There are some great workout videos of all types.

Thank you for the tips

I was thinking getting kettle bells but was unsure on what weight to start with, or if normal weights are better?

If you’re going to do an exercise video like 30 Day Shred or similar, then 2-3kg dumbbells are best to start.

If you’re going to do your own program of lifts, then you’ll want to go as heavy as you can, so to start with dumbbells in the 5kg+ range for arm exercises and an adjustable barbell set for deadlifts, squats etc.

I got a set of 3 weights from Argos or similar years and years ago - 1.5kg, 3kg and 5kg, and I'm still using them now (as well as adding bits and pieces over the years). The only thing is ensuring you're using correct form - at best you could be doing stuff that isn't impacting your muscles, at worst you could seriously injure yourself.

I'd say a DVD programme is probably the best - I started off with Davina all those years ago (and also did 30 day shred a few times, but found it quite boring), but I really like Fitness Blender now.

Think about when you will exercise, and what is different to make you do it now? I didn't really have the self-motivation to properly work out at home initially, but when my first was young, my mum would have her for an hour or so once a month or fortnight, and I signed up for 4 sessions with a PT at my mum's local council gym. This gave me the tools to know what to do in between sessions, but also, made me accountable - if I didn't do anything in between sessions, the sessions were useless, and also REALLY hard.

Over the years I've become much more self-motivated and now work out at home frequently, but I still see a PT fortnightly to keep me on the straight and narrow.

I lift weights at home.
Reps of 12 with i min break x 3
Hammer curls
Bicep curls
squats
one arm row
7 ups
squats
etc
I do it to music 30/40 mins per morning
does not feel like exercise its fun

Check out the free website www.hasfit.com. You can choose the workout type, the intensity and the equipment and length of time you wish to work out. It is brilliant.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 03/01/2019 12:16

B&M had a good 6kg kettlebell for about £11. But that's a fairly heavy weight to start with, if you're a complete beginner.
I'd defintely recommend a kettlebell routine - there's loads on youtube and they're easier to get to grips with than other free weights, pun intended. If you start with a 4kg weight, that's good but the issue is you would pretty soon then be able to move up to 6kg. But tbh it's not really about the weight, it's about the movements - squats, swings, lifts - that you do with the weight.
Argos, TK Maxx, Lidl/Aldi all do some good weights.
If you can find time for a half hour routine every day or other day, that would be a great habit to get into.

Cali369 · 03/01/2019 12:34

Not using weights specifically but would recommend Lucy Wyndham-Read on Youtube (and there's a great facebook group of her 'followers')

She does great free workouts, including walking workouts. Almost all are low impact and require very little space and most use your own bodyweight as resistance.

SushiMonster · 03/01/2019 12:40

I would strongly suggest getting a PT for a few sessions who will show your proper form

Needallthesleep · 03/01/2019 12:57

I would start with a 6kg or 8kg kettlebell, and 5kg dumbbells. If you go lighter than that you’ll need to do a lot of reps to build muscle.
