..to ask what jobs your DPs do and how they got there?

Asking out of curiosity.

DP has a relatively low paid job in security, he didn't take school seriously and has poor GCSE grades.

Though it doesn't seem on paper, he is really intelligent, has good maths skills and has common sense - he just lacked motivation.

Now he knows he needs a kick up the arse and needs to earn more money.
He's taken up as a relief/casual work to earn more money but it's not guaranteed.

Does anyone know of any careers in where they will train you whilst on the job and have good career prospects?

My husband's a prison officer but in one of the "safer" prisons so it's a fairly easy job that offers training and qualifications.

My DH was a Teacher, Head of Humanities and Head of Year 10 at a large senior school, earning around £45k, when it all got too much and he was signed off with work-related stress. He had to give up teaching and take some time out to get well again.

Once he was ready, he took an entry level £17k admin job in an office working in the Health & Safety dept. and worked hard and was promoted twice in two years and ended up on £23k. They also paid for him to take a related H&S qualification. He left there a year ago to start a new role in H&S and is on £25k. The new job has pay bands, so within 3 years he will be on £30k, at which point he will hopefully be in a position to apply for a more senior role. Financially we're nowhere near where we were (especially as I have been very ill and had to give up work for a few years, so we were without my £25k salary too, and I now temp on minimum wage), but he is happier and so much less stressed, which is priceless.

@BetsyBigNose I know exactly what you mean. My DH went from £35k to £17k and while it's been a strain financially I can't begin to put a price on the change in him since he started his new job.

Mine is a mental health nurse. He qualified in 2012 at 28 years old and is now a ward manager. He earns about 40k per annum.
He did a lot of things beforehand that didn't link to his job at all!

Im a nurse too on a competent different area and work 3 days a week part time. Earn about 20k per year.
People complain about working within the NHS as nurses, but neither of us work shifts, weve had xmas/new year off, very family friendly and we have a huge amount of job satisfaction thanks to working in areas that interest us Smile

My DP is a translator. He doesn't have any language qualifications though. He has a geochemistry degree, a post-grad qualification in logistics and is a part-qualified accountant. He worked in transport, then for the NHS, then moved to France and worked in accountancy. Five years ago he set up his own business as a medico-technical translator.

I work as a resource/minerals economist despite doing a first degree in fine art! (I'm old though and your first degree didn't matter so much in the 1980s as long as you had one).

@therewearethen1 he applied for prison officer but failed the blood pressure test. Sort of glad he did as the prisons round my area aren't supposed to be safe.

He know he can't earn major money but 25k plus we do us good.

Does he have 5 GCSEs? My dad has just started a job as a border force officer and it's OK money and he's enjoying it.

@HTKS, no he doesn't have 5 GCSEs. He may have to do an access course.
