How to preserve a haribo ring?

WhoPooped · 02/01/2019 14:01

Ok this may seem a bit random but bear with me 😂
My lovely DP proposed on NYE, totally unexpected (even by him it turns out) and totally lovely but without a ring!
We ended up at a friend’s house and I was gifted a haribo ring a substitute!
We’re going shopping tomorrow for the real deal but I feel strangely attached to my haribo ring and want to keep it 😂
It’s gone a tad sticky but I’d like to varnish it or something and put it in a frame to keep.
Any ideas on the best way to do this?

Also I’M GETTING MARRIED 😁❤️

My DH did the same thing! We've now been married for nearly 5 years, I did keep the haribo (in a ring box) and it pretty much looks the same. I mean, I wouldnt eat it, but it hasn't deteriorated much.

Aw how lovely, enjoy ring shopping tomorrow!

A good covering of CA Glue (Superglue) will do it also and you can sand it down so it's shiny..and you may still be able to wear it as a ring.

WhoPooped · 02/01/2019 14:41

@MyGastIsFlabbered yes good idea!

Getting married is so exciting! Have fun and congratulations!

Be careful about just pouring resin over it. If there is any moisture at all in the ring the resin will not set properly around it. I tried this a marzipan scroll that we were given at a restaurant meal for a special anniversary. The resin has never set properly and has dripped all down the frame we put it in. If you could dry out the ring first you might have a better chance.

Good idea above to practice with another haribo ring then you can see for sure what happens. Meanwhile put the precious ring somewhere dry perhaps?

And out of reach of my greedy 4yo who keeps eyeing it up as a snack Shock

Clear nail varish. pour one bottle in a little container lightly greased. when it starts to solidify, carefully lay the ring on top and then cover with another bottle or two of clear nail varnish.
When I was at school in the late 70's, we had some stupid craze of covering biscuits in nail varnish, painting the layers one by one, and where no oxygen could get to the biscuit it can't deteriorate.
Alternatively, why not email Haribo and see if they can suggest something. I'm sure they would love the story. Congratulations!

Thank you! I’m bursting with excitement!
Clear nail varnish might work, I remember doing similar with macaroni shells and tissue boxes 😂

I think it is likely the ring will deteriorate or go mouldy inside the resin tbh. If there are minute areas of air, that would allow mould to grow. Moisture in the sweet would make it deteriorate over time. You need to dry it out as much first, place it in a small airtight jar with sillica gel, and leave it there for a couple of weeks before attempting encasing in resin. Or put It in a dehydrator, but it might shrink oddly.

BlankTimes · 02/01/2019 15:03

Whilst it's still intact, photograph the Haribo ring on your finger, maybe shots of your fiancé holding your hand while you're wearing the Haribo ring. Be as arty as you like.

Make sure you have some images you really like, then try to preserve the Haribo. If it doesn't work, you have a choice of images to frame.

BeanTownNancy · 02/01/2019 15:07

I would encase it in resin and turn it into a necklace so I could still wear it. :)
(a round pendant would be much nicer of course)

Write to Haribo and ask them what they would recommend.

Well this is now in The Sun! 😂
Here’s a pic of the real ring now 😍

Gorgeous, did you change your mind about the sapphire?

WhoPooped · 04/01/2019 10:58

I did! I picked something totally different to the idea I went shopping with! I wanted plain and simple and ended up picking a huge blingy vintage style ring 😂

Aww that is such a good idea. I am reading the post because I was looking on how to preserve mine. Love it going to use this I think.

What did you do? Is the haribo ring still OK? My partner proposed with a haribo ring too and I want to keep it 😊 I

I preserved it with clear varnish and put it in a little frame in our hallway. It’s still good 5 years later! Although my son did accidentally nearly eat it prior to it being framed so it has a little nibble mark on it 😂
