When do you check out?

I work at a B&B, checkout time is very clear on booking and reminded in the room. 11am. Currently skulking in the main kitchen waiting for cf to leave - he is now making a cuppa as I can hear the kettle boiling!!
Maybe I should have turned the electric off?
So do you keep to the times given or are you a cf also??
I knocked on his door at 12.06 and he informed me he is packing!! He has been here 8 nights and took the Christmas tree from the main hallway into his room - without permission!!

Why did the owners not pull him up about the Christmas tree and take it back?

There should be charges in the booking t&c's for every minute over the check out time.

I'm always physically at reception with my keys by checking out time but then I'm never late for anything.

YoThePussy · 02/01/2019 13:16

Turn the electricity off, he is taking the piss. I wouldn’t leave it until 12.06, would be reminding him at breakfast time he needs to sling his hook promptly at 11. Otherwise he can pay for another night.

I would be packed and ready to go when expected. If in a hotel however and cleaning staff come hassling me will stay in the room until ten minutes before checkout. Hotels are a treat and not to be rushed.

Trudstrundr2 · 02/01/2019 13:27

Er, why was the Christmas tree theft not challenged?

Your T&C's should outline what happens if guests overstay -most places charge an extra late checkout fee. And if the room is needed for the next guest) depending on cleaning turnaround, a call at 11:30 then knocking on the door at 12 would be fairly standard surely..?

It doesn't sound professionally run at all.

KindergartenKop · 02/01/2019 13:29

Has he gone yet?

Sitranced · 02/01/2019 13:31

Charge them if they overstay.

thatduck · 02/01/2019 13:33

I have been known to go in and start striping the bed if they are seriously taking the P

Thesearmsofmine · 02/01/2019 13:36

Most places charge if you checkout late. The owners should deal with it.

CloserIAm2Fine · 02/01/2019 13:37

I’m never late to check out. If I was, such as if I’d misremembered the checkout time or overslept, I would fully expect to be charged.

The owners of the B&B should’ve challenged him on the Christmas tree and should be charging him for another night stay. It’s not someone who’s made an honest mistake, it’s someone who is blatantly taking the piss and who is being allowed to get away with it!

girlwithadragontattoo · 02/01/2019 13:39

I work for a travel company in Europe and we quite often get this, they completely ignore check out times no matter which website they've booked with.
I had to physically bag someones bags who told me the 10am check-out didn't work for him and he took the apartment key, I had other guests going in same day at 3pm and needed to have it cleaned. He got a shock when he came back to find myself and another person packing his bags

cakesandphotos · 02/01/2019 13:43

I used to work in a B&B and it’s so hard if you want repeat custom (although maybe you don’t with this guy!) I don’t think I would turn the electric off but I would be knocking and telling him to check out in the next 5 minutes or another night will be added to his bill. It’s unfair when the next guests will be arriving!

HaudYerWheestHen · 02/01/2019 13:53

We ran a B&B and we were lucky not to have that happen. They all checked out by check out time. The ones that I hated were the guests who left before breakfast and left the money on the side (only once did we have a runner). Those were the arseholes who had either pissed or shat the bed or spilled a smuggled in Chinese curry all over and ruined bedspreads and upholstery. And of course those darlings who cleared all the teas and coffees from the room (we left a large supply to be nice, dozens of sachets of Nescafé etc or had clearly been smoking cigarettes or weed. It wasn't even a rough place. We were a county house in rural Scotland!

I'd have gladly had CFers like yours in exchange. I'd be cleaning the room around him and telling him to take his cuppa downstairs by now. That's what spare keys are for.

Biggerknickersagain · 02/01/2019 14:02

When I've worked in a hotel this is one of the reasons why we won't take a booking without card details as security, not only does it guard against damage to the hotel/room but it also means you can charge a late check out fee to the card if they refuse to leave.
It's there in the terms and conditions that are signed on check in that you can be charged from the flat rate late check out fee to another night if you aren't out of the room by 11. We normally give half an hour grace and then start charging.
As for the tree - it happens, I'd have been after him and putting the tree back where it belonged! Some ppl who stay in hotels/b and b's are just cheeky fuckers full stop.

Santaisfastasleepatlast · 02/01/2019 14:40

He left 2 hours late!! Will notify the owner (on his hols), he doesn't live there - he noticed the tree after Christmas day - would have said yes had he asked! I went to lay fresh towels the other lunchtime as arranged and he asked I come back the next day! It wasn't his first visit but likely his last!! I intent to get paid for hanging around as I had somewhere else to be and he made me late! Owner can bill him for the hour - and he probably will!!
