A mate seems to be having a ball doing it...

I never got into raving even taking or drinking anything

What kind of people do it? Initially I assumed perhaps ex drug and alcohol users... so was trying to not pry too much with friend and quiz about it

Anyone had a go? I googled and it seems it is actually a thing!

Just had a look and as an ex drug (at clubs/raves/parties) user who loved to take ecstasy, coke and MDMA and the like back in the day, I very much doubt that meditating with a group of people in a club could recreate the utter euphoria I used to feel on those nights when taking drugs which is what these nights seem to be.. Still might be a good night though? You should try it if it sounds like you’d like it!

Is THAT what they do?! Figures!

Hmm I feel a bit lonely and I guess if these people manage to lose inhibitions without anything but each other they might be a friendly bunch

I'm not particularly hippy but like a guided meditation

I went to a sober rave in Manchester once and loved it. Started at 6 am but I've always been an early riser. Wasn't as great as my ecstasy days, but as I no longer do drugs this is the closest I'll ever get to raving again.

It’s amazing! Really it is. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a different kind of euphoria to nightclub dancing on MDMA (I do both) and attracts a lot of people who would never take drugs as well as those who do in other settings. Some sessions hedge more towards ecstatic dance where the idea is that you just let yourself get completely lost to the music and move however your guides you - there’s generally no judgement from other attendees about form or moves. Sober raves are usually similar music and vibe to a nightclub, and you get “high” on endorphins because it’s just fantastically good exercise and atmosphere. If you’re in London or Manchester, give Morning a shot - nothing beats early morning sober raving before heading off for a day’s work.

*Morning Gloryville, that was meant to say.

Do you need to go with friends or if you just turned up do you think you could feel at home soon enough?

The crowd is usually so friendly and welcoming and open and full of like-minded people that if you’re a reasonably outgoing sort and just head into the dancefloor, you’ll soon start connecting with others. Of course, it’s a lot of fun to go with friends as well, but I think a lot of people at sober raves also acknowledge that it isn’t always easy to get your friends to buy into the idea! And are extra inclusive as a result.
